Wikimania is the Wikimedia movement's annual conference, organized by volunteers and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Topics of presentations and discussions include Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, other wikis, open-source software, free knowledge and free content, and social and technical aspects related to these topics. Since 2011, the winner of the Wikimedian of the Year award (known as the "Wikipedian of the Year" until 2017) has been announced at Wikimania. The Hindi Wikipedia ( , ) is the Modern Standard Hindi edition of Wikipedia. It was launched in July 2003. As of , it has articles, and ranks 10th in terms of depth among Wikipedias. In October 2021, there were 72 million page views. It is the first Wikipedia to be written in a variety of Hindustani, followed by the Urdu Wikipedia, launched in January 2004. On 30 August 2011, the Hindi Wikipedia became the first South Asian-language Wikipedia to surpass 100,000 articles. Hindi, using the Devanagari script, requires complex transliteration aids to be typed on devices. Thus, a Phonetic Roman Alphabet converter is also available on the Hindi Wikipedia, so the Roman keyboard can be used to contribute in Hindi, without having to use any special Hindi-typing software. The Kannada Wikipedia ( kn, ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಶ್ವಕೋಶ) is the Kannada-language edition of Wikipedia. Started in June 2003, it is moderately active and as of , it has articles with active users. It is the twelfth-most popular Wikipedia in the Indian subcontinent. The Kannada Wikipedia community held a meeting in Bangalore on April 2, 2006, which got fairly high press coverage. History As of August 16, 2009 the Kannada Wikipedia had about 6,800 articles, making it the 100th-biggest Wikipedia edition. As of January 2016, the Kannada Wikipedia is the tenth-largest and, thus, the smallest Wikipedia among other Indian-language Wikipedias. The Telugu Wikipedia ( te, తెలుగు వికీపీడియా) was begun on 10 December 2003 by Venna Nagarjuna, who is known for Padma (a system for transforming text in Indic scripts among open-source and proprietary formats). On 28 August 2016, its article count was 65,048—fifth among the Indian-language Wikipedias, after Hindi Wikipedia, Hindi, Urdu Wikipedia, Urdu, Tamil Wikipedia, Tamil and Nepal Bhasa Wikipedia, Newar. Background In 2005, the Hindi Wikipedia received a boost when Chava Kiran, Akkineni Pradeep, Vyzas Satya, Veeven and Charivari joined; Charivari later spearheaded the Telugu campaign. Satya planned and executed a project to add stubs for districts, Tehsil, mandals and Telugu films with the aid of a bot.
