Young Adult Novel
Young adult fiction (YA) is a category of fiction written for readers from 12 to 18 years of age. While the genre is primarily targeted at adolescents, approximately half of YA readers are adults. The subject matter and genres of YA correlate with the age and experience of the protagonist. The genres available in YA are expansive and include most of those found in adult fiction. Common themes related to YA include friendship, first love, relationships, and identity. Stories that focus on the specific challenges of youth are sometimes referred to as problem novels or coming-of-age novels. Young adult fiction was developed to soften the transition between children's novels and adult literature. Enchanted Forest Chronicles
The ''Enchanted Forest Chronicles'' is a series of four young adult fantasy novels by Patricia C. Wrede titled ''Dealing with Dragons'', ''Searching for Dragons'', ''Calling on Dragons'', and ''Talking to Dragons''. Additionally, the ''Book of Enchantments'' includes one short story titled ''Utensile Strength'' and also includes a short story titled ''The Princess, the Cat, and the Unicorn'' which takes place in the Enchanted Forest universe, but does not involve any of the familiar characters. Patricia Collins Wrede (; born March 27, 1953) is an American author of fantasy literature. She is known for her ''Enchanted Forest Chronicles'' series for young adults, which was voted number 84 in NPR's 100 Best-Ever Teen Novels list. Career Wrede graduated from Carleton College in 1974 with a BA in biology and obtained an MBA from the University of Minnesota in 1977. She finished her first book in 1978 while working as an accountant and financial analyst. She was a founding member of The Scribblies, along with Pamela Dean, Emma Bull, Will Shetterly, Steven Brust and Nate Bucklin, in January 1980, "to which hebelonged for five extremely productive years." She sold her first book to Ace in April 1980 and it was published in 1982. In the fall of 1980, Wrede met Lillian Stewart Carl, who introduced her to Lois McMaster Bujold. A tournament, or tourney (from Old French ''torneiement'', ''tornei''), was a chivalry, chivalrous competition or Mock combat, mock fight in the Middle Ages and Renaissance (12th to 16th centuries), and is one type of hastilude. Tournaments included melee and hand-to-hand combat (weapons were often blunted to prevent serious injury), contests of strength or History of archery, accuracy, and sometimes Jousting, jousts. Calling On Dragons
''Calling on Dragons'' is a young adult fantasy novel by Patricia C. Wrede, third in the ''Enchanted Forest Chronicles''. Plot summary This novel is the third in the ''Enchanted Forest'' series, told from the witch Morwen's perspective. Morwen, a witch who lives in the Enchanted Forest, is having trouble with people who believe that magic should follow traditional forms, specifically one Arona Michealear Grinogion Vamist. Morwen's cats find a large rabbit named Killer as well as the burned-looking splotches that a wizard's staff leaves in the forest, despite the spell on the forest (established in the last book) that should prevent it. Morwen calls the magician Telemain to help, who mentions a wizard-melting spell he came up with. They then find the wizard Antorell (son of the Head wizard Zemanar), who is two inches tall, shrunken by his own spell, who tries to escape but is subdued by the cats and then melted by Telemain. ''Dealing with Dragons'' is a young adult fantasy novel written by Patricia C. Wrede, and is the first book in the ''Enchanted Forest Chronicles'' series. The novel chronicles the adventures of the princess Cimorene, who escapes her tediously ordinary family to become a dragon's princess. It received the 1991 Minnesota Book Award for Fantasy and Science Fiction. Plot summary Princess Cimorene is frustrated by her life and persuades the castle staff to teach her fencing, magic, cooking, Latin, and other interesting subjects that are considered very "improper" for princesses to learn. The King and Queen take Cimorene on a state visit to a neighboring kingdom. Cimorene learns that they plan to arrange her marriage to an annoying prince named Therandil.
