Tali Shemesh
Tali Shemesh (Hebrew: טלי שמש; born in 1969) is an Israeli documentary filmmaker. Biography Shemesh was born in Jerusalem. She graduated from Sam Spiegel film school. She then directed dozens of investigative and documentary television programs, including with Ilana Dayan. In 1999, she directed her first documentary film, ''Hashmena Vehayafa'' (Fat and Beautiful) for Channel 8. In 2004, she directed the film ''Zahav Lavan Avoda Shchora'' (White Gold Black Work), which deals with the exploitation of outsourced workers at the Dead Sea Works. The film roused a public outcry. In 2008, she directed the full-length documentary ''The Cemetery Club'', about s a group of elderly Holocaust survivors who immigrated to Israel from Poland and meet every week for the last 20 years in the cemetery on Mount Herzl, and hold a meeting there that includes discussions and reading their writings. Hebrew Language
Hebrew (; ; ) is a Northwest Semitic language of the Afroasiatic language family. Historically, it is one of the spoken languages of the Israelites and their longest-surviving descendants, the Jews and Samaritans. It was largely preserved throughout history as the main liturgical language of Judaism (since the Second Temple period) and Samaritanism. Hebrew is the only Canaanite language still spoken today, and serves as the only truly successful example of a dead language that has been revived. It is also one of only two Northwest Semitic languages still in use, with the other being Aramaic. The earliest examples of written Paleo-Hebrew date back to the 10th century BCE. Beersheva Bus Station Shooting
On 18 October 2015, a gunman shot and killed the 19-year-old Israeli soldier Omri Levy in a bus station in Beersheba. After killing the soldier, he took his automatic rifle and fired into a crowd. When more security officers appeared, the gunman fled, but was killed by security personnel. A 29-year-old Eritrean asylum seeker, Haftom Zarhum was mistaken for a second attacker. He was shot eight times by police and was kicked and beaten by four Israelis as he lay wounded, while bystanders shouted profanities at him. Graphic footage of the lynching was filmed by a bystander and spread on social media. At least eleven people, including Zarhum, who died of his wounds a few hours later, and four police officers, were hospitalized. The gunman was the first Israeli Bedouin to be involved in an attack against Israelis. The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival is the largest film festival of any kind in the Georgia (U.S. state), state of Georgia and is the largest Jewish film festival in the world. The 23-day festival is held in late winter at multiple venues in Atlanta, Georgia and in the suburbs of Alpharetta, Marietta, Georgia, Marietta and Sandy Springs. The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is the largest documentary festival in North America. The event takes place annually in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The 27th edition of the festival took place online throughout May and June 2020. The Adelaide Film Festival (AFF, formerly ADLFF) is film festival usually held for two weeks in mid-October in cinemas in Adelaide, South Australia. Originally presented biennially in March from 2003, since 2013 AFF has been held in October. International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam
The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is the world's largest documentary film festival held annually since 1988 in Amsterdam. Over a period of twelve days, it has screened more than 300 films and sold more than 250,000 tickets. Visitors to the festival have increased from 65,000 in 2000 to 285,000 in 2018. The festival is an independent, international meeting place for audiences and professionals to see a diverse (in form, content, and cultural background) program of high-quality documentaries. The European Film Awards (or European Film Academy Awards) have been presented annually since 1988 by the European Film Academy to recognize excellence in European cinematic achievements. Death In The Terminal
''Death in the Terminal'' is a 2016 Israeli Rashomon style documentary film by Tali Shemesh and Asaf Sudri, recounting the events of the October 2015 Beersheva bus station shooting. Synopsis The film reconstructs the first 18 minutes after the shooting, when an Eritrean refugee was mistaken for a terrorist, shot by a security guard and beaten by bystanders. Security camera footage is inter-cut with eyewitness interviews and video from mobile phones. However, the film does not reveal until two-thirds of the way through that the man on the ground is innocent, leaving the audience to assume until then that he is the terrorist. Production The film is directed by Tali Shemesh and Asaf Sudry. The security footage used was not released by the Israeli authorities, but was leaked to the filmmakers.
