Talamanca (canton)
Talamanca is a canton in the Limón province of Costa Rica. The head city is Bribri, located in Bratsi district. History Talamanca was created on 20 May 1969 by decree 4339. Geography Talamanca has an area of km² and a mean elevation of metres. The county is noted for its beautiful beaches, especially in Cahuita and Puerto Viejo, which are popular tourist locations. Talamanca contains one of Costa Rica's three official border-crossing points with Panamá, the Sixaola-Guabito crossing. Districts The canton of Talamanca is subdivided into the following districts: # Bratsi # Sixaola # Cahuita # Telire Demographics For the 2011 census, Talamanca had a population of inhabitants. The county suffers from pervasive poverty. As of 2009, its human-development index is the lowest-ranked of all Costa Rican cantons. Bribri People
The Bribri are an Indigenous people in eastern Costa Rica and northern Panama. Today, most Bribri people speak the Bribri language or Spanish. There are varying estimates from government officials of the group's population. Estimates of the total Bribri population range as high as 35,000 people, although official estimates assert there are about 11,500 Bribri people in Costa Rica, and about 1000 Bribri people in Panama. According to a census by the Ministerio de Salud of Costa Rica however, there are 11,500 Bribri living within service range of the Hone Creek Clinic alone, suggesting the total Costa Rican Bribri population is larger. They are also a voting majority in the Puerto Viejo de Talamanca area. Chirripó National Park
Chirripó National Park is a national park of Costa Rica, encompassing parts of three provinces: San José, Limón and Cartago. It was established in 1975. It is named for its most prominent feature, Cerro Chirripó, which at is the highest mountain in Costa Rica. Geography Chirripó is the 38th most prominent peak in the world. In terms of Holdridge life zones, the park can be categorized into five ecosystems: lowland tropical wet forest, premontane tropical wet forest, lower montane wet forest, montane wet forest and subalpine wet forest (páramo). Most of the park consists of both primary rain forests and primary cloud forests. Around it changes to wet desert. Talamanca Bribri
The Bribri Talamanca Indigenous Territory is one of the four Costa Rican indigenous territories of the Bribri ethnic group. It borders the Talamanca Cabecar Indigenous Territory. It was created by decree in 1985 and is located in the canton of Talamanca, Limón Province. It covers an approximate area of 43,690 hectares of a predominantly mountainous area. Populated It covers the communities of Chasse, Bamboo, Watsi, La Pera, Meleruk, Suretka, Shiroles, Sepecue, Mojoncito, Bajo Coen, Alto Coen, Coroma, Amubri, Soki, Kachabri, Suiri, Katsi, Dururpe, Namu Woki, Boca Uren, Alto Uren Alto Lari, Duriñak, Yorkin, Shuabb and Ak Bërie.
