Talair
TALAIR was a Papua New Guinea airline founded in 1952. It ceased operations in 1993. Company history Talair had its origins as Territory Airlines, founded in 1952 as a charter company. It operated to towns throughout the country where the only means of communication was by air. Its bases of operations were Lae and Madang. The aircraft used were small Cessna and Beechcraft types. It was purchased by Dennis Buchanan in 1958. Territory Airlines was granted scheduled flight rights in 1968 from Goroka. Soon it was serving over 50 destinations in the territory. In 1971 it took over Sepik Air Charters and in 1975 took over MAC Air Charter and the destinations grew to over 100. The need to fly to all types of destinations forced Territory Airlines to have a very varied fleet, but the mainstay of the fleet were the Britten-Norman Islander and the DHC-6 Twin Otter. Dennis Buchanan
Sir RanaId Dennis Buchanan (1932 – 2001) was the owner of several airlines in Oceania, most notably Talair in Papua New Guinea (PNG). He was also a publisher and served one term in the country's pre-Independence National Assembly. Early life Buchanan was born on 6 November 1932 in Sydney, Australia, being the second-youngest of nine children of Brisbane and Jessie Buchanan. His mother died when he was six years old. In early 1942, he and Lilla, his youngest sister, were sent to live with their uncle on a dairy farm in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, attending a one-teacher school with about one dozen pupils. At the end of 1943, he returned to Sydney to complete his primary education, living with a family friend. His father then enrolled him at All Saints' College, Bathurst, a boarding school where he obtained an Intermediate Certificate in 1948. The Pilatus PC-6 Porter is a single-engined STOL utility aircraft designed by Pilatus Aircraft of Switzerland. First flown in 1959, the PC-6 was produced at Pilatus Flugzeugwerke in Stans, Switzerland. It has been built in both piston engine- and turboprop-powered versions, and was produced under licence for a time by Fairchild Hiller in the United States. The Beechcraft Queen Air is a twin-engined light aircraft produced by Beechcraft in several versions from 1960 to 1978. Based upon the Twin Bonanza, with which it shared key components such as wings, engines, and tail surfaces, but featuring a larger fuselage, it served as the basis for the highly successful King Air series of turboprop aircraft. Beechcraft Baron
The Beechcraft Baron is a light twin-engined piston aircraft designed and produced by Beechcraft. The aircraft was introduced in 1961. A low-wing monoplane developed from the Travel Air, it remains in production. Design and development The direct predecessor of the Baron was the Beechcraft 95 Travel Air, which incorporated the fuselage of the Bonanza and the tail control surfaces of the T-34 Mentor military trainer. To create the new airplane, the Travel Air's tail was replaced with that of the Beechcraft Debonair, the engine nacelles were streamlined, six-cylinder engines were added, and the aircraft's name was changed.
