The Taku River Tlingit First Nation are the band government of the Inland Tlingit in far northern British Columbia, Canada and also in Yukon. They comprise two ''ḵwaan'' (tribes) of the Tlingit people, who are otherwise coastal, the ''Áa Tlein Ḵwáan'' of the Atlin Lake area and the ''Deisleen Ḵwáan'' of Teslin Lake, whose main focus is the Teslin Tlingit Council in Teslin, Yukon. In Canada, an Indian band or band (french: bande indienne, link=no), sometimes referred to as a First Nation band (french: bande de la Première Nation, link=no) or simply a First Nation, is the basic unit of government for those peoples subject to the ''Indian Act'' (i.e. status Indians or First Nations). Atlin District
The Atlin District, also known as the Atlin Country, is a historical region located in the far northwestern corner of the Canadian province of British Columbia, centred on Atlin Lake and the gold-rush capital of the region, the town of Atlin. The term "Atlin District" was also used synonymously with the official administrative area named the Atlin Mining District, established during the gold-mining heyday contemporaneous with the Klondike Gold Rush. The region also includes adjoining Teslin and Tagish Lakes and the Bennett Lake area in the narrow strip of BC separating the Alaska Panhandle from the Yukon. Taku River/T'aḵú Téiú' Conservancy is a conservancy located in the Stikine Region of British Columbia, Canada. It was established on June 22, 2012, as a result of the Wóoshtin Wudidaa Atlin Taku Land Use Plan and Taku River Tlingit First Nation Strategic Engagement Agreement. The conservancy protects a large region of pristine wilderness along the Taku River from its confluence with the Nakina and Inklin Rivers to the Alaska-British Columbia border. Name origin The Tlingit name T'aḵú Téiú' means “Heart of the Taku”. Geography Taku River Conservancy covers of pristine wilderness along the entire length of the Taku River Valley, excluding a large area around the unincorporated locality of Tulsequah. The history of the Tlingit includes pre- and post-contact events and stories. Tradition-based history involved creation stories, the Raven Cycle and other tangentially-related events during the mythic age when spirits transformed back and forth from animal to human and back, the migration story of arrival at Tlingit lands, and individual clan histories. More recent tales describe events near the time of the first contact with Europeans. European and American historical records come into play at that point; although modern Tlingit have access to those historical records, however, they maintain their own record of ancestors and events important to them against the background of a changing world.
