Take Some Risks
''Take Some Risks'' is a live album by multi-instrumentalist Alan Silva. It was recorded in November 1986 at La Galerie Maximilien Guiol in Paris, and was released in 1989 by the French label In Situ. On the album, Silva, on double bass, is joined by clarinetist Misha Lobko, violinist Bruno Girard, cellist Didier Petit, and percussionist Roger Turner. Although the musicians knew each other well prior to the performance, it was their first appearance as a quintet. Reception In a review for AllMusic, François Couture called the album "a satisfying session, focused and highly intense," one that "takes the listener on a challenging but rewarding journey." He wrote: "''Take Some Risks'' makes a fine album documenting a special meeting from a period that has been underrecorded." Alan Silva
Alan Silva (born Alan Lee da Silva; January 22, 1939 in Bermuda) is an American free jazz double bassist and keyboard player. Biography Silva was born a British subject to an Azorean/Portuguese mother, Irene da Silva, and a black Bermudian father known only as "Ruby". He emigrated to the United States at the age of five with his mother, eventually acquiring U.S. citizenship by the age of 18 or 19. He adopted the stage name of Alan Silva in his twenties. Silva was quoted in a Bermudan newspaper in 1988 as saying that although he left the island at a young age, he always considered himself Bermudian. He was raised in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, where he first began studying the trumpet, and moved on to study the upright bass. Silva is known as one of the most inventive bass players in jazz and has performed with many in the world of avant-garde jazz, including Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, Sunny Murray, and Archie Shepp. Silva performed in 1964's October ... Free Jazz
Free jazz is an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting. They became preoccupied with creating something new and exploring new directions. The term "free jazz" has often been combined with or substituted for the term "avant-garde jazz". Europeans tend to favor the term "free improvisation". Others have used "modern jazz", "creative music", and "art music". The ambiguity of free jazz presents problems of definition. ''In the Tradition'' is an album by multi-instrumentalist Alan Silva, trombonist Johannes Bauer, and drummer Roger Turner. It was recorded in April 1993 in Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, France, and was released in 1996 by In Situ Records. In an interview, Silva stated that the tradition to which the album title refers is "an improvising tradition" that "goes back about forty thousand years." He commented: "this is probably as old as the guy picking up some rocks and - (''claps hands, knocks on table'') 'Yeah, that's interesting.'" Roger Turner (musician)
Roger Turner (born 1946, Whitstable, England) is an English jazz percussionist. He plays the drumset, drums, and various percussion, and was brought up into the jazz and visual art cultures inhabited by his older brothers, playing drums from childhood in informal jazz contexts. Career Turner studied English literature and contemporary philosophy at Sussex University, playing with Chris Biscoe for the British Council in 1968, a first concert in improvisation. His move to London gave him contact with the first and second generation improvisers and he began to play primarily with Lol Coxhill, Gary Todd, John Russell, Hugh Davies, Steve Beresford, and Phil Minton. In the years immediately after 1974 his work was primarily concentrated on opening the way to a more personal percussion language.
