Tajikistan At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Tajikistan competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's sixth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics in the post-Soviet era. The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Tajikistan sent the nation's smallest delegation to the Olympics since 2000. Seven athletes, five men and two women, were selected to the Tajikistan team across four different sports (athletics, boxing, judo, and swimming). For the first time since its official debut in 1996, Tajikistan did not register any of its athletes in wrestling at these Games. Among the nation's athletes on the roster were London 2012 lightweight boxer Anvar Yunusov, 15-year-old freestyle swimmer Anastasia Tyurina, who made history as Tajikistan's youngest ever Olympian, and hammer thrower and reigning Asian Games champion Dilshod Nazarov, who became the first ever Tajikistani to compete in four successive Olympic Games. The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Tajikistan (NOC) is a sports governing body that was established in 1992 to manage Tajikistan's activities in relation to the Olympics. The office of the NOC is located in the center of the city, on Aini Street in Dushanbe. The current National Olympic Committee of Tajikistan is headed by Bakhrullo Radzhabaliev (President) and Shirinjon Mamadsafoev (Secretary General). Tajikistan made its debut as an independent nation at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, United States. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games marked the country's fourth appearance and first Olympic medal wins, with Rasul Boqiev winning bronze in the Judo under 73 kg category and Yusup Abdusalomov winning the silver medal in the freestyle wrestling under 84 kg category. The gold and silver medals were determined by a single-elimination tournament, with the winner of the final taking gold and the loser receiving silver. Judo events awarded two bronze medals. Quarterfinal losers competed in a repechage match for the right to face a semifinal loser for a bronze medal (that is, the judokas defeated in quarterfinals A and B competed against each other, with the winner of that match facing the semifinal loser from the other half of the bracket). Career He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the -90 kg event and lost in the second round to Mark Anthony.
