Taiwan TG Butterfly Garden
Taiwan TG Butterfly Garden (), established in 2000, is the first formal transgender support group in Taiwan. Many members are transsexual; others identify as crossdressers, and others might be described as questioning or transgressive. The organization served as flag guards at 2005 Taiwan Pride, and demanded amendments for gender equality in employment law, along with the Awakening Foundation, Gender/Sexuality Rights Association Taiwan and Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association. The name 'butterfly' was inspired by a mixed gender butterfly. Gender/Sexuality Rights Association Taiwan (G/STRAT; ) was established in May 1999 in Taiwan. It aims to promote rights of sexual minorities in the aspects of family, education system, politics, economy and law. It had protested the "Measures Governing the Rating Systems of Publications and Pre-recorded Video Programs" in Taiwan, supported the "Gin Gin's" gay bookstore when it was accused "offenses against morals", and presented Asian Lesbian Film and Video Festival in August 2005. Wang Ping is currently the Secretary-general. In 2004, it won International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission's (IGLHRC) Felipa de Souza Award. A transgender (often abbreviated as trans) person is someone whose gender identity or gender expression does not correspond with their sex assigned at birth. Many transgender people experience dysphoria, which they seek to alleviate through transitioning, often adopting a different name and set of pronouns in the process. Josephine Chuen-juei Ho, is the chair of the English department of National Central University, Taiwan, and coordinator of itCenter For the Study of Sexualities She has withstood lawsuits directed at her outspokenness on gender and rights issues. She is one of the most known feminist scholars in Taiwan. She is called "the godmother of the Taiwanese queer movement." Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights in Taiwan are regarded as the most progressive of those in Asia. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity are legal, and same-sex marriage was legalized on 24 May 2019, following a Constitutional Court ruling in May 2017. Although same-sex couples are currently unable to jointly adopt a child, one may adopt the biological children of the other (so-called stepchild adoption), and as of 2022 there is a court precedent for joint adoption. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender characteristics in education has been banned nationwide since 2004. With regard to employment, discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation has also been prohibited by law since 2007. Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association (TTHA; ) is an organization that provides the LGBT community with peer counseling, support networks, and a community resource center. It is the first LGBT non-governmental organization (NGO) registered in Taiwan. TTHA was established in 1998 as a joint effort of four groups that focus on LGBT and gender issues, the Gay Counselors Association, Queer & Class, LGBT Civil Rights Alliance, and the Gay Teachers’ Alliance. The organization's current director-general is Yu Zhi-Yun (徐志雲). The Awakening Foundation () is a Taiwanese feminist organization aiming to provide the women of Taiwanese society with the resources necessary to combat gender discrimination. Beginning as an offshoot of the gender equality magazine "Awakening Magazine Publishing House", the organization is representative of Taiwan's women's movement that began during the 1970s.
