Taisto Armas Mäki (2 December 1910 – 1 May 1979) was a Finnish long-distance runner – one of the so-called "Flying Finns". Like his coach and close friend, Paavo Nurmi, Mäki broke world records over two miles, 5000 metres and 10,000 metres – holding the records simultaneously between 1939 and 1942. Mäki was the first man to run 10,000 metres in less than 30 minutes, breaking his own world record in a time of 29:52.6 on 17 September 1939. Mäki was born in Rekola in the municipality of Vantaa. He was a shepherd by trade, earning him the nickname "Rekolan paimenpoika" (the "Rekola herdboy"). At a time when Finland dominated men's long-distance running, Mäki did not come to prominence until 1938. Taisto Tähkämaa (born 1924) is a Finnish Centre Party politician who served at the Parliament and held various cabinet posts, including minister of defense and minister of agriculture and forestry in the 1970s and 1980s. Biography Tähkämaa was born in Pargas in 1924. He is an agrologist and agricultural advisor by profession. He is a war veteran and participated in World War II against Soviet Red Army. He was a member of the Centre Party and served as its vice chair between 1980 and 1984. He was elected to the Parliament on 23 March 1970 and served there until 21 March 1991. Tähkämaa was appointed minister of defense on 15 May 1977 to the second cabinet of Kalevi Sorsa, and his tenure ended on 25 May 1979. Taistoism ( fi, taistolaisuus) was an orthodox pro-Soviet Union, Soviet tendency in the mostly Eurocommunist Finland, Finnish Communism, communist movement in the 1970s and 1980s. The Taistoists were an interior opposition group in the Communist Party of Finland. They were named after their leader Taisto Sinisalo whose first name means "a battle", "a fight" or "a struggle". Sinisalo's supporters constituted a party within a party, but pressure from the Communist Party of the Soviet Union prevented the party from formally splitting. The term ''taistolaisuus'' was a derogatory nickname invented by Helsingin Sanomat and was never used by the group themselves. Although they were sometimes identified as "Stalinism, Stalinists", this was not a central part of their orthodoxy.
