Tai Wai Village () aka. Chik Chuen Wai () is a walled village in the Tai Wai area of Sha Tin District, Hong Kong. Location Tai Wai Village is located next to Tai Wai station and the main commercial streets of the Tai Wai area. Administration Tai Wai Village is a recognized village under the New Territories Small House Policy. History Tai Wai Village, where the name of the area came from, was the largest and oldest walled village in Sha Tin. It was built in 1574 during the Ming Dynasty, and was called Chik Chuen Wai () at the time. It was originally made up of 16 families, Wai (), Chan (), Ng (), Yeung (), Wong (), Lee (), Hui (), Cheng (), Tong (), Yuen (), Yau (), Lam (), Lok (), Tam (), Mok () and Choy (). The Hong Kong Archaeological Society () is a government-funded organization dedicated to carrying out excavations and preserving archaeological heritage in Hong Kong. The society is affiliated with the Hong Kong Museum of History to establish artifact collections and journal publications. History After the discovery of prehistoric sites in Hong Kong during the 1920s, archaeology activities began in the area. Artifact recoveries and research publications appeared by the 1930s. The earliest recorded archaeologists in Hong Kong were John Schofield and Raffaele Maglioni. Simeone Volonteri
Simeone Volonteri () (June 6, 1831 – December 21,1904) was an Italian missionary and a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. Life Simeone Volonteri was born in Milan, Italy. He joined the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions in 1855. He was in Hong Kong from 1860 to February 1870. During his stay in Hong Kong, he worked extensively in Tai Wo and Ting Kok. (A previous version of this paper was presented at a Seminar 'Hong Kong: its people, culture and traditions, the Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong. 15-16 April 1983) He was ordained bishop in 1874 by Eustachio Zanoli. He was Vicar Apostolic of Southern Honan () (China) from August 28, 1882 to his death. He died in Fengqiao (), Shangqiu, in Henan province of China.
