Taekwondo At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's 49 Kg
The women's 49 kg competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 17 August, at the Carioca Arena 3. Chinese defending champion Wu Jingyu lost to the silver medalist Tijana Bogdanović in the quarterfinal, unable to win her third Olympic gold. Instead, South Korea's Kim So-hui finished first, beating Panipak Wongpattanakit from Thailand in the process. Wongpattanakit eventually grabbed a bronze medal in the repechage. Competition format The main bracket consisted of a single elimination tournament, culminating in the gold medal match. The top eight athletes in each event were seeded so as not to face each other in the preliminary round. The remainder of the qualified athletes were drawn randomly on 15 August 2016. Two bronze medals were awarded at the Taekwondo competitions. A repechage was used to determine the bronze medal winners. Carioca Arena 3 (Portuguese: ''Arena Carioca 3'') is an indoor stadium in Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The venue hosted taekwondo at the 2016 Summer Olympics, taekwondo and fencing at the 2016 Summer Olympics, fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the judo at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, judo and Wheelchair fencing at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, wheelchair fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Carioca Arena 3 was planned to be transformed into a sports high school after the Games. During the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, the structure of Carioca Arena 3 was used as a base for the health workers on vaccination programme. ''Taekwondo'', ''Tae Kwon Do'' or ''Taekwon-Do'' (; ko, 태권도/跆拳道 ) is a Korean martial arts, Korean form of martial arts involving punching and kicking techniques, with emphasis on head-height kicks, spinning jump kicks, and fast kicking techniques. The literal translation for tae kwon do is "kicking", "punching", and "the art or way of". They are a kind of martial arts in which one attacks or defends with hands and feet anytime or anywhere, with occasional use of weapons. The physical training undertaken in Taekwondo is purposeful and fosters strength of mind through mental armament. Taekwondo practitioners wear a uniform, known as a dobok. Taekwondo at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 17 to 20 August at the Carioca Arena 3 inside the Barra Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca. Around 128 taekwondo fighters competed in eight weight categories; four for men, and four for women. Qualification Taekwondo competition at these Games featured a total of 128 athletes, 64 in each gender, and 16 in each of the eight weight categories. Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) was allowed to enter up to a maximum of eight competitors, four of each gender, based on the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Olympic rankings, such that an athlete per NOC must be among the top six in each weight category.
