Table Tennis At The 2020 Summer Paralympics
Table tennis at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan took place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. There were 280 qualified slots (174 male, 106 female) which competed in male and female events. The 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They kept the 2020 name and were held from 24 August to 5 September 2021. Classification There are 11 classifications in table tennis. Classes 1 – 5 are assigned to athletes who sit in a wheelchair while competing. Classes 6 – 10 are assigned to athletes who stands while competing. The lower number indicates a greater degree of impairment. Class 11 is for athletes with intellectual impairment. Qualification Events 31 events were contested. The events are men's and women's team and individual competitions for the various disability classifications. Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium
is a sporting complex in Sendagaya, Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. Built in 1954 for the World Wrestling Championship, it was also used as the venue for gymnastics at the 1964 Summer Olympics, and hosted the table tennis competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The gymnasium was rebuilt to a futuristic design created by Pritzker Prize winner Fumihiko Maki from 1986 to 1990. The gymnasium is a one-minute walk from Sendagaya Station on the Chūō-Sōbu Line and Kokuritsu Kyogijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line. Description and events The main arena includes a large indoor arena that hosts national and international sporting events. The arena holds 10,000 people (6,000 fixed, 4,000 temporary). Paul Karabardak
Paul Arif Karabardak (born 3 October 1985) is a Welsh para table tennis player who has competed in three Summer Paralympics. Biography Karabardak was a keen footballer when he was a child but he suffered from a massive stroke aged 10, he played table tennis after his stroke in a local youth club. Sporting career Aged 16 in 2001, Karabardak was chosen to participate in the GB Para Table Tennis Team in Frankfurt for the European Championships. He won his first national medal along with David Hope, a bronze in the teams' event. He continued to win two silver medals and two bronze medals in the team events. In 2017, in Lasko, Slovenia, Karabardak won his first ever European gold medal with David Wetherill and Martin Perry after defeating Croatia in the final. 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China were Karabardak's first Paralympic Games. Peter Rosenmeier (born 23 March 1984) is a Danish male table tennis player, previous World Champion and current Paralympic Champion of his class (M6). Rosenmeier has participated at all Summer Paralympics since the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, where he won a bronze medal.
