TMS5100
The Texas Instruments LPC Speech Chips are a series of speech synthesizer digital signal processor integrated circuits created by Texas Instruments beginning in 1978. They continued to be developed and marketed for many years, though the speech department moved around several times within TI until finally dissolving in late 2001. Speak & Read
Speak & Read is an electronic learning aid made in , by Texas Instruments. Speak and Read was part of a family of learning toys i.e. " Speak & Math" and " Speak & Spell". Speak & Read helped children from ages four to eight develop and improve their reading comprehension and vocabulary. Speak & Read came with a companion booklet for use with the skill activity modes included in the unit. The toy had a vocabulary of 250 words. Electronics The display was a vacuum fluorescent display (VFD). Speak & Read units used a membrane keyboard for input. The Speak & Read used a single-chip voice synthesizer, the TI TMC0280 (later called the TMS5100), that was also used in the Speak & Spell. The TMS5100 used a 10th-order linear predictive coding (LPC) model and the electronic DSP logic. Digital Signal Processor
A digital signal processor (DSP) is a specialized microprocessor chip, with its architecture optimized for the operational needs of digital signal processing. DSPs are fabricated on MOS integrated circuit chips. They are widely used in audio signal processing, telecommunications, digital image processing, radar, sonar and speech recognition systems, and in common consumer electronic devices such as mobile phones, disk drives and high-definition television (HDTV) products. The goal of a DSP is usually to measure, filter or compress continuous real-world analog signals. Most general-purpose microprocessors can also execute digital signal processing algorithms successfully, but may not be able to keep up with such processing continuously in real-time. Echo II (expansion Card)
The Echo II was a plug-in expansion card, speech synthesizer card for the Apple II and Apple IIe personal computers that allowed applications to use speech synthesis. The Echo II used the TMS5220 speech synthesis chip to synthesize speech. The Echo II software could synthesize either unlimited text-to-speech using stitched phonemes, or play back raw LPC data for specific words, with resulting higher speech quality. LPC (linear predictive coding) was the speech synthesis technology used, which allowed applications to encode speech data in a compact form. ''Discs of Tron'' is the second arcade video game based on the 1982 Disney film ''Tron''. While the first ''Tron'' is a collection of four minigames, ''Discs of Tron'' is a single game inspired by ''Tron''s disc-battles. ''Bagman'' is a platform game released in arcades by Valadon Automation in 1982. It was licensed to Stern for U.S. distribution in 1983 and to Taito in Japan the same year. Zaccaria, (later briefly reorganized under Mr. Game before ending production) was an Italian company of pinball and arcade machines that existed in Bologna from 1974 until 1990. The factory was sold to tecnoplay. History The company was founded as a manufactory for pinball arcade games in Bologna by the three brothers Marino, Franco and Natale Zaccaria. Electronic Voice Alert
Electronic voice alert (EVA) was an option available on many Chrysler K-car-based vehicles in the mid-1980s. Chrysler and Dodge used technology of the Texas Instruments LPC Speech Chips, that were also used in the Speak & Spell toy. The EVA would automatically lower the radio volume and deliver eleven different spoken warning messages to drivers using a speech synthesizer in 24 certain models. A similar system was used in 1984 to 1986 Nissan 300ZX, Nissan 200SX, and the Nissan Maxima GL and GLE models. The messages are played from a miniature phonograph record, similar as used in speaking dolls. The EVA was available on the Chrysler LeBaron (and the optional Mark Cross Edition), Chrysler Town and Country Wagon, Chrysler Fifth Avenue, Chrysler New Yorker, Chrysler Laser, Dodge Daytona, and Dodge 600 between 1983 and 1988.
