THX Ltd. is an American company that develops the eponymous high fidelity audio/visual reproduction standards for movie theaters, screening rooms, home theaters, computer speakers, gaming consoles, car audio systems, and video games. Founded on May 20, 1983 by George Lucas and headquartered in San Francisco, California, it is currently a subsidiary of Razer Inc. THX was developed by Tomlinson Holman at Lucas's company Lucasfilm in 1983 to ensure that the soundtrack for the third ''Star Wars'' film, ''Return of the Jedi'', would be accurately reproduced in the best venues. THX was named after Holman's initials, with the "X" standing for "crossover" or "experiment"; the name is also an homage to Lucas's first film, ''THX 1138'' (1971). The distinctive glissando up from a rumbling low pitch used in the THX trailers, created by Holman's co-worker James A. Moorer, is known as the "Deep Note". ''THX 1138'' is a 1971 American social science fiction film co-written and directed by George Lucas in his directorial debut. Produced by Francis Ford Coppola and co-written by Walter Murch, the film stars Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence, with Don Pedro Colley, Maggie McOmie and Ian Wolfe in supporting roles. The film is set in a dystopian future in which the populace is controlled through android police and mandatory use of drugs that suppress emotions. ''THX 1138'' was developed from Lucas's 1967 student film '' Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB'', which he made while attending the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The feature film was produced in a joint venture between Warner Bros. and American Zoetrope. A novelization by Ben Bova was published in 1971. The film received mixed reviews from critics and underperformed at the box office upon its initial release.
