Cabo Verde Airlines is an international airline based in Cape Verde. It connects three continents with non-stop flights from their hub at Amílcar Cabral International Airport on Sal Island. History Cabo Verde Airlines was established in 1958. In July 1975, following the independence of Cape Verde, the airline was designated as the national carrier and became a public (state-owned) company in 1983. The airline was formerly TACV, and its logo included a blue wing with seven lines that represented the number of domestic inter-island flights offered by the airline. Until 1984, it served 8 of the 9 inhabited islands. Unacceptable safety standards at some of the country's other airports, namely Esperadinha Airport and Agostinho Neto Airport, led to the cancellation of flights to those islands. Amílcar Cabral International Airport , also known as Sal International Airport, is the main international airport of Cape Verde. The airport is named after the revolutionary leader Amílcar Cabral. It is located two km west-southwest from Espargos on Sal Island. Sal is the main hub for the national airline, Cabo Verde Airlines; and serves as a base for carrier Cabo Verde Express. This airport was also one of NASA's locations for a facility to handle the Space Shuttle after reentering from orbit. History The first airport on Sal Island was built in 1939 by Italy, as a fuel and provisions stopping-point on routes from Europe to South America. TACV Flight 5002 was a flight operated by TACV that crashed on 7 August 1999. Agostinho Neto Airport
The Agostinho Neto Airport (Portuguese ''Aeroporto Agostinho Neto'') was an airport located near the town of Ponta do Sol on the northern tip of the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde. The airport was named after Agostinho Neto, an Angolan politician who lived on the island during his exile. On 7 August 1999 TACV Flight 5002 from São Pedro Airport (São Vicente) to Agostinho Neto Airport crashed, killing all 18 occupants. For safety reasons, the airport was closed in the 1990s. Since then, Santo Antão does not have an airport. There are plans to build a new airport near Ponte Sul, west of Porto Novo. Construction may start in the 2020s. It was opened in October 2005, replacing the old Francisco Mendes International Airport. Francisco Xavier da Cruz, also known as B. Leza or Beleza (earlier Portuguese form: Beléza) (December 3, 1905 – July 14, 1958) was a Cape Verdean writer, composer and singer of morna music.. Biography Da Cruz was born in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. B. Leza has innovated in the morna genre and frequently used the passage cords (known as the Brazilian halftone, the jargon used by Cape Verdean musicians). In aviation, visual flight rules (VFR) are a set of regulations under which a pilot operates an aircraft in weather conditions generally clear enough to allow the pilot to see where the aircraft is going.
