Tête-à-la-Baleine is an List of unconstituted localities in Quebec, unconstituted locality within the Types of municipalities in Quebec, municipality of Côte-Nord-du-Golfe-du-Saint-Laurent in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec, Canada. Tête-à-la-Baleine, occasionally known as Whale Head in English, was settled in the 19th century after Michael Kenty bought the local trading post from the Labrador Company. Initial settlement mostly took place on the nearby islands in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, although eventually most residents moved to the community's current site on the mainland in order to be closer to sources of wood and food in the winter. However, some residents still move back and forth, residing on the islands in summer and in the mainland community in winter. The community is named after a nearby island in the Gros Mécatina Archipelago that resembles a whale head. An unconstituted locality (french: localité non constituée, link=no) is a specific type of designated place in Quebec, a small community that has not been constituted as a municipality (Quebec uses the term "constituted" rather than "incorporated"). Designated places are defined by provinces and territories of Canada in cooperation with Statistics Canada, and Quebec has two kinds: dissolved municipalities (french: municipalité dissoute) and unconstituted localities. Dissolved municipalities are often the result of mergers and amalgamations (see Municipal history of Quebec and :Former municipalities in Quebec), and in some cases Statistics Canada chooses to keep tracking population and other figures for census purposes over the territory of the pre-merger municipality. However, unconstituted localities never had the status of municipality to begin with.
