Twenty-first-century Fundraising Walks In Tasmania
Tasmania has been since it was settled by Europeans, traversed in many ways, and in most cases un-recorded. In the twenty-first century, some people have created and recorded their journeys around the island as 'events' for publicity and fund raising, with most walks mentioned here in the latter category. A north–south crossing of Australia may also include walking around Tasmania, known as a 'traversal crossing'. Historically, the sheer volume of people walking or traversing the island in a number of ways is not traceable. Some noted nineteenth-century ventures around the island before proper roads included such ventures of the walks of Thomas Bather Moore and the Walk to the West, which involved substantial logistic issues due to terrain and lack of support. Steep Point
Steep Point () is the westernmost point of mainland Australia. It is located within the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, north of the state's capital Perth, in the proposed Edel Land National Park. It is also a part of the Shark Bay World Heritage Site. The point was named ''Steyle Hock'' by Willem de Vlamingh in 1697. Access Access to Steep Point is by four-wheel drive vehicles only, as tracks to the point are through sand dunes. The North West Coastal Highway is the closest sealed road and is east of the point. An entry permit is required to travel to the point, which can be purchased at the ranger's house in Edel Land National Park, which is about east of Steep Point. Camping areas and basic facilities are also available in the park and can be purchased at the ranger's house. Walking or running across Canada has long been pursued as a way to seek notoriety or bring publicity to social causes. 1921 Halifax Herald Coast to Coast Race This was an informal race across Canada fueled by the ''Halifax Herald'' newspaper. In 1921, Jack Behan and his son, Clifford, of Dartmouth, NS, Jennie and Frank Dill (husband and wife) of Windsor, NS, and Charles Burkman of Whitewood, SK, all walked from Halifax, NS to Vancouver, BC. In order of arrival in Vancouver, the Behans completed the walk in 136 days, the Dills in 134 days, and Burkman in 139 days. Although the Behans were the first to reach Vancouver, the Dills did not leave until seven days after the Behans began their walk.
