''Twentieth of July'' (German: ''Der Zwanzigiste Juli'') is a 1947 novella by the Austrian writer Alexander Lernet-Holenia. During the Nazi era an aristocratic Austria woman lends her papers to a Jewish acquaintance, only to find herself without an identity when the woman dies. In 1948 it was adapted into a film '' The Other Life'' starring Aglaja Schmid, Robert Lindner and Gustav Waldau Gustav Waldau (27 February 1871 – 25 May 1958) was a German actor. Alexander Lernet-Holenia
Alexander Lernet-Holenia (21 October 1897, in Vienna — 3 July 1976) was an Austrian poet, novelist, dramaturgist and writer of screenplays and historical studies who produced a heterogeneous literary opus that included poetry, psychological novels describing the intrusion of otherworldly or unreal experiences into reality, and recreational films. Youth and service in World War I Lernet-Holenia was born in 1897, as Alexander Marie Norbert Lernet to Alexander Lernet (an ocean liner officer) who had married his mother Sidonie (née Holenia) shortly before his birth. He attached his mother's maiden name to his family name only when he was formally adopted by Carinthian relatives of his mother (whose aristocratic family had lost most of its wealth after the war) in 1920. It is based on the 1947 novella ''Twentieth of July'' by Alexander Lernet-Holenia. Synopsis During the Nazi era, an Austrian, Elisabeth Josselin, assists Suzette, a Jewish friend, by swapping papers with her so she can get medical treatment. When Suzette dies, Elisabeth finds herself officially dead and so decides to adopt the identity of Suzette.
