Turtle Island (Native American Folklore)
Turtle Island is a name for Earth or North America, used by some Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Indigenous peoples, as well as by some Indigenous rights, Indigenous rights activists. The name is based on a common North American Indigenous creation story and is in some cultures synonymous with "North America." There are a number of contemporary works which continue to use and/or tell the story of the Turtle Island creation story. Lenape The Lenape story of the "Great Turtle" was first recorded by Europeans between 1678 and 1680 by Jasper Danckaerts. The story is shared by other Northeastern Woodlands tribes, notably those of the Iroquois mythology, Iroquois Confederacy. Guishan Island / Gueishan Island or Steep Island or Turtle Island (), also known as Kweishan Island or Kweishan Tao, is an island in the Pacific Ocean, part of Toucheng Township, Yilan County, Taiwan and located east of port of Kengfang Fishery Harbor. The island's name is derived from the resemblance of the topography of the island to that of a turtle. Turtle Island (horse)
Turtle Island (16 March 1991 – 4 July 2014) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the leading British two-year-olds of 1993 when he won four of his seven races including the Norfolk Stakes, Phoenix Stakes and Gimcrack Stakes. In the following year he won the Greenham Stakes before winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas by fifteen lengths. He was beaten in his three remaining races and was retired to stud, where he had some success as a sire of winners. Background Turtle Island was a bay colt with a small white star bred in Ireland by Ron Con Ltd and Robert Sangster's Swettenham Stud. The Turtle Island Quartet is a string quartet that plays hybrids of jazz, classical, and rock music. The group was formed in 1985 by David Balakrishnan, Darol Anger, and Mark Summer in San Francisco. They released their first album on Windham Hill Records in 1988 with Irene Sazer. History The group plays jazz standards and original compositions that cross several styles, including blues, classical, jazz, and world music. Violinist David Balakrishnan got the idea for a jazz string quartet in 1985. He invited cellist Mark Summer, who had been working for three years as a member of a Canadian orchestra. Paul Reginald Nelson (born 21 May 1955), known by the stage name Paul Hyde, is a British-born Canadian singer-songwriter. He co-founded the rock band Payola$ with Bob Rock, serving as the band's main lyricist and vocalist. He later performed and recorded with Rock under the band name Rock and Hyde and has released six solo albums over his musical career.
