Tilpin
Tilpin, Latin ''Tilpinus'' (died 794 or 800), also called Tulpin, a name later corrupted as Turpin, was the bishop of Reims from about 748 until his death. He was for many years regarded as the author of the legendary '' Historia Caroli Magni'', which is thus also known as the "Pseudo-Turpin Chronicle". He appears as one of the Twelve Peers of France in a number of the '' chansons de geste'', the most important of which is ''The Song of Roland''. His portrayal in the ''chansons'', often as a warrior-bishop, is completely fictitious. According to Flodoard, the tenth-century historian of the church of Reims, Tilpin was originally a monk at the Basilica of St Denis near Paris. He may have served as a chorbishop under Bishop Milo of Trier (who was also acting as bishop of Reims) before becoming full bishop upon Milo's death around 762. James Turpin (organist)
James Turpin FRCO (15 December 1840 in Nottingham – 29 July 1896 in Brighton) was an English organist, composer and teacher. Career He was born in Nottingham on 15 December 1840 into a musical family which ran a dealership in musical instruments at 20 Chapel Bar, Nottingham. His brother Edmund Hart Turpin was organist at Nottingham Cathedral and James succeeded him in this position in 1866. James Turpin was an excellent musician, being amongst many other good things, a capable organist and a painstaking teacher. He achieved his FRCO in 1875. He graduated Mus Bac at the Cambridge University in 1880. He was active as an organ recitalist, organist, pianist and lecturer. As an organist he was well known and gave many recitals, including at the Royal Albert Hall during the International Inventions Exhibition in 1885. Randy Turpin
Randolph Adolphus Turpin (7 June 1928 – 17 May 1966), better known as Randy Turpin, was a British boxer in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1951 he became world middleweight champion when he defeated Sugar Ray Robinson. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001. Early life Randolph Turpin was born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, to a black father Lionel who was born in British Guyana now known as Guyana in 1896. He had come to England to fight in the First World War. He had met Randolph's mother after coming out of hospital following treatment for his injuries sustained towards the end of the war. During his service he had fought at the battle of the Somme. He died within a year of Randolph's birth, having never really recovered from the lung damage caused by a gas attack. Pierre Jean François Turpin
Pierre Jean François Turpin (11 March 1775, Vire – 1 May 1840) was a French botanist and illustrator. He is considered one of the greatest floral and botanical illustrators during the Napoleonic Era and afterwards. As an artist, Turpin was largely self-taught. In 1794 he was stationed in Haiti as a member of the French Army. Here he met botanist Pierre Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854), through whom, Turpin learned botany, and in the meantime, created numerous botanical field drawings that were to become a basis of further study when the two men returned to France. In regard to their work in Haiti, they were able to describe approximately 800 species of plants. Turpin would have a working relationship with Poiteau throughout his career. Through his collaboration with Poiteau and other naturalists, Turpin created some of the finest watercolors and illustrations of plants that are known to exist. Najai "Nitro" Turpin (December 19, 1981 – February 14, 2005) was a professional boxing, boxer born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, USA. He was a contestant on reality TV show The Contender (television series), ''The Contender''. On the show, he was placed on the East Coast team and pitted himself against Sergio Mora, a man seven inches taller than he was, in the first round. He committed suicide on February 14, 2005, while sitting in a car with his girlfriend and 2-year-old daughter. The motive for his suicide was not entirely clear. However, the fact that he had not been allowed to fight between the time of his elimination from ''The Contender'' and the show's finale (so as not to spoil the ending), along with the low self-esteem that may have resulted from his defeat on the show may have contributed to his suicide. Melvin Harrison Turpin (December 28, 1960 – July 8, 2010) was an American professional basketball player. He played five seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was an All-American college player at the University of Kentucky, where as a senior he led the Wildcats to the 1984 Final Four. Basketball career A 6'11" center, Turpin was born in Lexington, Kentucky and attended Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia from 1979–80. Louis Washington Turpin (February 22, 1849 – February 3, 1903) was a U.S. Representative from Alabama. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, When his parents both died, he moved to Alabama with his sister and settled in Perry County in 1858. He was Self-educated. He engaged in agricultural pursuits. Kenneth Turpin
Kenneth Turpin (13 January 1915 – 14 September 2005) was a Provost of Oriel College, Oxford, from 1957 to 1980. He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford from 1966 to 1969. Turpin was born in Ludlow, Shropshire, England, in 1915 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School. Entering Oriel to read Greats, quickly changing to history, he graduated in 1939 with a first class degree and was awarded his BLitt for a thesis on Robert Harley in 1940. Due to lung trouble he was considered unfit for military service, he entered the Treasury as a temporary civil servant and from 1943 to 1945 served as assistant private secretary to Clement Attlee, then Deputy Prime Minister. KaVontae Turpin (born August 2, 1996) is an American football wide receiver and return specialist for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at TCU before joining the second iteration of the New Jersey Generals for the 2022 USFL season. On June 22, 2022, Turpin was awarded MVP for the USFL. John Henry Turpin
John Henry "Dick" Turpin (August 20, 1876 – March 10, 1962) was a sailor in the United States Navy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Turpin was one of the first African American Chief Petty Officers in the U.S. Navy. He is also notable for surviving the catastrophic explosions of two U.S. Navy ships: in 1898, and in 1905. Early life and career Turpin was born on August 20, 1876, in Long Branch, New Jersey and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in New York City on November 4, 1896. USS ''Maine'' He was a Mess Attendant on the battleship when it exploded in Havana Harbor, Cuba under mysterious circumstances on the night of 15 February 1898.
