''Turning the Tables'' is a 1919 American silent comedy film directed by Elmer Clifton, written by Wells Hastings and Lois Zellner, and starring Dorothy Gish, Raymond Cannon, George Fawcett, Eugenie Besserer, Kate Toncray, and Rhea Haines. Elmer Clifton
Elmer Clifton (March 14, 1890 – October 15, 1949) was an American writer, director and actor from the early silent days. A collaborator of D.W. Griffith, he appeared in ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915) and ''Intolerance'' (1916) before giving up acting in 1917 to concentrate on work behind the camera, with Griffith and Joseph Henabery as his mentors. His first feature-length solo effort as a director was ''The Flame of Youth'' with Jack Mulhall. Clifton honed his talents during the late 1910s, directing vehicles for Mulhall and Herbert Rawlinson at Universal and then for Dorothy Gish for Famous Players-Lasky. Two of his projects with Gish, '' Nobody Home'' and ''Nugget Nell'', featured performances from pre-stardom Rudolph Valentino. Most of this early output has been lost. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library." Porter Strong
Porter Strong (1879- June 11, 1923) was an American silent film character actor. Often he appeared in ethnic humour roles as a country bumpkin or as an individual in blackface. He's best remembered for his comic relief appearances in films directed by D. W. Griffith. Since many of Griffith's films survive so has Strong's performances.
