Turn The World Around
''Turn the World Around'' is an album by Harry Belafonte, released in 1977. After recording exclusively for the RCA Victor label since 1953, Belafonte signed with Columbia Records in the mid 1970s. After a series of pop-oriented albums, ''Turn the World Around'' was a return to interpreting folk songs of other cultures. Gary Ginell stated in his AllMusic review: "It is an absolute triumph and one of the finest albums of his career." Although recorded in the US, it was only released overseas. The title track became the focus of one of the most acclaimed performances on the successful television series, ''The Muppet Show'', where Belafonte explained the artistic theme of the song before performing it with specially designed Muppets that resembled African tribal masks: Series producer Jim Henson considered this production to be his best work on the series, and featured it in numerous retrospectives of his art; Belafonte performed the song again at Henson's memorial service in ... Morris Goldberg
Morris Goldberg is a South African saxophonist who is recognised as one of the early pioneers of Cape Jazz, along with Dollar Brand and Chris McGregor. Biography Born in Cape Town, Goldberg grew up in Observatory, a suburb of Cape Town. He left South Africa in the apartheid years to study at the Manhattan School of Music, where he received both bachelor's and master's degrees. Now based in New York City, he is also a virtuoso clarinet and flute player. He has recorded a number of his own albums and is known as a member of the Harry Belafonte band and for his work with Paul Simon. He also played in the band on ''The Rosie O'Donnell Show''. Goldberg has toured and recorded albums with his own band, Ojoyo. He calls their sound ''safrojazz'', presenting the music as a combination of South African and American jazz music. Howard Johnson (jazz Musician)
Howard Lewis Johnson (August 7, 1941 – January 11, 2021) was an American jazz musician, known mainly for his work on tuba and baritone saxophone, although he also played the bass clarinet, trumpet, and other reed instruments. He is known to have expanded the tuba’s known capacities in jazz. Johnson was known for his extensive work as a sideman, notably with George Gruntz, Hank Crawford, and Gil Evans. As a leader, he fronted the tuba ensemble Gravity and released three albums during the 1990s for Verve Records; the first ''Arrival'', was a tribute to Pharoah Sanders. Dom Um Romão (3 August 1925 – 27 July 2005) was a Brazilian jazz drummer and percussionist. Noted for his expressive stylings with the fusion band Weather Report, Romão also recorded with varied notable artists such as Cannonball Adderley, Paul Simon, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jorge Ben, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, and Tony Bennett. Juvenal de Holanda Vasconcelos, known as Naná Vasconcelos (2 August 1944 – 9 March 2016), was a Brazilian percussionist, vocalist and berimbau player, notable for his work as a solo artist on over two dozen albums, and as a backing musician with Pat Metheny, Don Cherry, Björk, Jan Garbarek, Egberto Gismonti, Gato Barbieri, and Milton Nascimento. Dom Salvador, (born 1938 in Rio Claro) stage name of Salvador da Silva Filho, is a Brazilian jazz/ MPB pianist most notable for his Rio 65 Trio that featured the Brazilian jazz drummer Edison Machado and bassist Sergio Barrozo. He also did tours of Europe with musicians like Sylvia Telles. In May 1976, he recorded his one and only American jazz album, ''My Family'', for Muse Records in New York City. Odetta Holmes (December 31, 1930 – December 2, 2008), known as Odetta, was an American singer, actress, guitarist, lyricist, and a civil rights activist, often referred to as "The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement". Her musical repertoire consisted largely of American folk music, blues, jazz, and spirituals.
