''Turn the Tides'' is the only studio album by 38th Parallel. Critical reception Ashleigh Kittle writes in her '' AllMusic'' review, "38th Parallel offers listeners an edgy style, at times mixing elements of hip-hop with gentler melodies and harmonies." J. D. of ''Jesus Freak Hideout'' writes, "While 38th is nothing new to our ears, they offer a decent debut with Turn the Tides and a positive release for those tired of the trite angst of secular counterparts." Todd Hertz of ''Christianity Today'' ranks this album No. 11 in its Top 12 Christian Albums of 2002. 38th Parallel (band)
38th Parallel was a Christian rock band formed in Ames, Iowa. Before being signed they received extensive airplay in Iowa markets alongside other CCM Artists. Unknown to them, they were entered into a talent search contest for Christian music giant Word Records created by former A&R Alvin V. Williams. Alvin Williams signed the group to Word Records, but they soon signed and released their first project on, Squint Entertainment. Their name is a play on the 38th parallel north, which divides North Korea from South Korea. Their first album, '' Turn the Tides'', was released in 2002, following the band's nationwide tour with artists Skillet and The Benjamin Gate. The album received a Dove Award nomination in 2003 for Rock Album of the Year. Rap Rock
Rap rock is a fusion genre that fuses vocal and instrumental elements of hip hop with various forms of rock. Rap rock's most popular subgenres include rap metal and rapcore, which include heavy metal and hardcore punk-oriented influences, respectively. Squint Entertainment
Squint Entertainment was a record label owned by Word Entertainment, started and run by musician and songwriter Steve Taylor in 1997. Squint pushed Sixpence None the Richer to mainstream success with their single "Kiss Me". The band had been in the CCM genre for several years before that. Other successful bands, such as Chevelle, emerged from Squint's brief creative life. History It first appeared in the United States in 1997. In an attempt to bring meaningful Christian content to other media, the company started a major film project called ''St. Gimp''.
