The Turks in Israel ( tr, ), also referred to as Israeli Turkmen. are ethnic Turkish descendants who have had a long-established presence in the region. Migration of Turkish settlers to the Levant began in the 12th century, and continued throughout the Mamluk and Ottoman rule. In the early 2000s, Turkish workers from the Republic of Turkey settled in Israel, working predominantly on construction projects. Diaspora During and after the 1947–1949 Palestine war, some Turkmen fled the region and settled in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.. The Jezreel Valley (from the he, עמק יזרעאל, translit. ''ʿĒmeq Yīzrəʿēʿl''), or Marj Ibn Amir ( ar, مرج ابن عامر), also known as the Valley of Megiddo, is a large fertile plain and inland valley in the Northern District of Israel. The Turkish minorities/communities in the former Ottoman Empire refers to ethnic Turks, who are the descendants of Ottoman-Turkish settlers from Anatolia and Eastern Thrace, living outside of the modern borders of the Republic of Turkey and in the independent states which were formerly part of the Ottoman Empire. Thus, they are not considered part of Turkey's modern diaspora, rather, due to living for centuries in their respective regions (and for centuries under Turkish rule), they are now considered "natives" or "locals" as they have been living in these countries prior to the independence and establishment of the modern-nation states. They are a branch of the Circassian diaspora, which was formed as a consequence of the 19th-century Circassian genocide that was carried out by the Russian Empire during the Russo-Circassian War; Circassians are a Northwest Caucasian ethnic group who natively speak the Circassian languages and originate from the historical country-region of Circassia in the North Caucasus. Arkadaş Association is an Israel-Turkey friendship organization in Yehud-Monosson, Israel. Arkadaş (pronounced ''Arkadash'') means "friend" in Turkish. History Arkadaş Association was founded in 1997 by Eyal Peretz. Its main goals are to preserve Turkish Jewish heritage and promote friendship and tolerance between Israel and Turkey. In 2005, the association established a Turkish Jewish cultural center in Yehud. A monument to Atatürk in the garden of Arkadaş Association was dedicated on November 2, 2007 in a ceremony attended by the Turkish ambassador to Israel, Namık Tan. The organization has over 4,000 members since its inception, about 40 volunteers to run its vast operations and its twelve branches throughout the country.
