Gameplay ''Turbofire'' is a near-future vehicular-combat scenario involving the Challenge Cup Can-Am Duel-Racing. Reception Jerry Epperson reviewed ''Turbofire'' in '' Space Gamer'' No. 70. Epperson commented that "As a scenario, it is interesting to play . . . once. After that, ''Turbofires true value to the autoduel enthusiast is in what remains: an excellent racing system. Where the players develop the racing vehicles, ''Turbofire'' provides the fuel for running those races, and will continue to do so long after the checkered flag has been dropped at Millenium Park." Highway 2000 (board Game)
''Highway 2000'' is a board game published by Threshold Games in 1981 that is focused on highway combat. Description ''Highway 2000'' is a game of armed vehicle combat for 3–5 players that takes place on near-future highways. Players create heavily armed and armored cars, then fight each other in a battle royale. The game board comes in three pieces portraying a five-lane highway; as action moves ahead, the back third of the map can be shifted to the front of the map, extending the highway. The game comes with several scenarios that may also include random non-combat cars entering the highway at random times travelling in either direction. Publication history In 1979, the movie '' Mad Max'', featuring highway combat, proved to be a hit. The following year, Steve Jackson Games released ''Car Wars'', a microgame using the same theme, and it too proved to be very popular. AutoVentures
Task Force Games was a game company started in 1979 by Allen Eldridge and Stephen V. Cole. TFG published many games, most notably including both ''Star Fleet Battles'' (currently published by the original designers, Amarillo Design Bureau) and the '' Starfire'' series of games (which is now published by Starfire Design Studio), which were later novelized by David Weber into such books as ''In Death Ground'', ''The Shiva Option'' and ''Insurrection''. Eldridge sold the company to New World Computing in 1988, which became a division of The 3DO Company in 1996 and went out of business in 2003. During the period that TFG was owned by New World Computing, the two companies attempted the first-ever simultaneous release of a board game and computer game. The two versions of King's Bounty wound up releasing about 9 months apart, and after NWC had sold TFG to John Olsen. ''Car Wars'' is a vehicle combat simulation game developed by Steve Jackson Games. It was first published in 1980. Players control armed vehicles in a post-apocalyptic future. Game play In ''Car Wars'', players assume control of one or more cars or other powered vehicles, from motorcycles to semi trucks. Optional rules include piloting helicopters, ultralights, balloons, boats, submarines, and tanks. The vehicles are typically outfitted with weapons (such as missiles and machine guns), souped-up components (like heavy-duty fire-proof wheels, and nitro injectors), and defensive elements (armor plating and radar tracking systems). Within any number of settings, the players then direct their vehicles in combat. The published games use cardstock counters to represent vehicles in a simulated battle upon printed battlemaps. ''Battlecars'' is a simple Wargame (video games), wargame based upon the ''Mad Max'' genre of a post-apocalyptic world dominated by aggressive, warring gangs. It was first published by Games Workshop in 1983 and the game designers were Gary Chalk (illustrator), Gary Chalk and Ian Livingstone. Gameplay Each player has one or more "battlecars" that are equipped with machine guns, flamethrowers, spike droppers and the like, with much taken from the cinematic James Bond mythology of modified vehicles. The simple game mechanics allowed for quick and entertaining game play, with damage being marked off using card counters. The game was too simple for some more mature players, given its relatively basic rules and lack of capacity to design unique vehicles.
