Tungane Broadbent
Tungane Broadbent (born 1940, Mangaia, Cook Islands) is a Cook Islands artist, notable for her tivaevae/tivaivai, with her career making tivaivai spanning five decades. Broadbent founded the O’oa Fabric & Fibre Arts group in 2007, Rarotonga, to teach women to sew tivaivai. In 2006, Queensland Art Gallery commissioned her to produce a Mangaian tivaivai for the 5th Asia Pacific Triennial which is a feature of the Modern Art Gallery, hosted by Premier of Queensland Peter Beattie on behalf of the Queensland Government. In 2015, Creative New Zealand brought Tungane Broadbent, along with five other senior artists from the Cook Islands to New Zealand to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cooks Islands self-governance. Mangaia
Mangaia (traditionally known as A'ua'u Enua, which means ''terraced'') is the most southerly of the Cook Islands and the second largest, after Rarotonga. It is a roughly circular island, with an area of , from Rarotonga. Originally heavily populated, Mangaia's population has dropped by 75% in the last 50 years. Geography Originally known as ''A'ua'u'' or ''A'ua'u Enua'' ("terraced"), the island was named Mangaia (or ''Mangaianui-Neneva'', "Mangaia monstrously-great") by Tamaeu, who came to the island from Aitutaki in 1775. Geologists estimate the island is at least 18 million years old. It rises 4750 m (15,600 ft) above the ocean floor and has a land area of 51.8 km2. Cook Islands National Museum
The Cook Islands National Museum is a museum in Avarua on Rarotonga, in the Cook Islands. Its collection includes contemporary and historic artefacts, as well as replicas of objects in foreign institutions. Background A purpose-built museum building was opened on 14 October 1992, in order to protect and encourage understanding of the cultural heritage of the Cook Islands. The museum had previously been housed in a section of the National Library. The museum has a 200m² display space, as well as an office and store. Exhibitions In 2019 the museum hosted an exhibition by Chinese micro-calligrapher Wang Zhiwen. Atiu
Atiu, also known as Enuamanu (meaning ''land of the birds''), is an island of the Cook Islands archipelago, lying in the central-southern Pacific Ocean. Part of the Nga-pu-Toru, it is northeast of Rarotonga. The island's population has dropped by two-thirds in the last 50 years. Geography Atiu is a raised volcanic island surrounded by a reef from which rise cliffs of fossilized coral (''makatea''). The makatea cliff forms a ring round the island, creating a virtual plateau. Erosion of the inside of the ring has formed a dip of about into fertile land, which gradually rises again to a central flat-topped hill. The low swampy land consists of taro plantations, marshes and a lake, Tiroto. This fertile area also grows bananas, citrus fruits, pawpaws, breadfruit and coconuts. Reuben Paterson
Reuben Paterson (born 1973 Auckland, New Zealand) (Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāi Tūhoe, Tūhourangi, Scottish) is a New Zealand artist based in New York, United States known for using glitter in his works. Early life Paterson's family comes from Matatā in the Bay of Plenty, but he grew up in Bucklands Beach in Auckland, where his father Louis Paterson was a landscaper and his mother Sue Foss enjoyed gardening. He became interested in glitter as a medium in the 1990s when he was a student at Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland. Paterson graduated from the University of Auckland in 1997 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and in the same year was one of three people awarded the Möet et Chandon Arts Fellowship to France, becoming the first Māori recipient and at the time the youngest recipient ever.
