Truro Bearcats (1977–1983)
The Truro Bearcats were a Junior "A" Hockey team based in Truro, Nova Scotia, that played out of the Metro Valley Junior Hockey League. Originally a founding member of the league, and then known as the Kentville Riteway Rangers in 1967, the franchise later moved to Truro and became the Bearcats in 1968. The Bearcats competed until 1983 when they folded mid-season. History Relocation and success The Truro Bearcats were founded in 1967 as the Kentville Riteway Rangers along with the Metro Valley Junior Hockey League. At this time the league was leveled at Junior "B". The following season the Rangers were relocated to Truro and renamed the Bearcats. The move to Truro proved successful for the franchise as the Bearcats captured five MVJHL championships - three back to back from 1969-70 to 1971-72. Truro (Mi'kmaq: ''Wagobagitik''; Scottish Gaelic: ''Truru'') is a town in central Nova Scotia, Canada. Truro is the shire town of Colchester County and is located on the south side of the Salmon River floodplain, close to the river's mouth at the eastern end of Cobequid Bay. History The area has been home to the Mi'kmaq people for several centuries. The Mi'kmaq name for the Truro area, "Wagobagitik" means "end of the water's flow". Mi'kmaq people continue to live in the area at the Millbrook and Truro reserves of the Millbrook – We’kopekwitk band. Acadian settlers came to this area in the early 1700s. The Mi'kmaq name for the Truro area was shortened by the settlers to "Cobequid", and the bay to the west of the town is still named Cobequid Bay. By 1727, the settlers had established a small village near the present downtown site of Truro known as "Vil Bois Brule" (Village in the burnt wood). Maritime Junior Hockey League
The Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) is a Junior A ice hockey league under Hockey Canada, a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League. It consists of five teams from New Brunswick and one team from Prince Edward Island, which make up the EastLink North Division (formerly Roger Meek), and six teams from Nova Scotia which make up the Eastlink South Division. The winner of the MHL playoffs competes for the Fred Page Cup against the winners of the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League and the Central Junior A Hockey League. The winner of the Fred Page Cup then moves on to compete for the Canadian National Junior A Championship, formerly known as the Royal Bank Cup. Colchester Legion Stadium
The Colchester Legion Stadium is a 1625-seat multi-purpose arena in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. The Colchester Legion Stadium has six team dressing rooms, an officials room and first aid room. Canteens and washrooms are located at the front of the facility. Upstairs is a fully heated lounge which overlooks the ice surface or main venue area of the stadium. The facility served as home to the Truro Bearcats of the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) from 1996 until 2013 until the team moved to the new Rath Eastlink Community Centre. The arena has hosted the 1998 Allan Cup as it was won by the Truro Bearcats senior team, 2001 World Under 17 Hockey Championships (co-hosted with New Glasgow) and the 2002 Fred Page Cup. The Truro Bearcats are a Junior "A" ice hockey team based out of Truro, Nova Scotia. The Bearcats are one of six Nova Scotia teams in the Maritime Junior Hockey League. History Metro Valley League years Originally, Truro was a member of the Metro Valley Junior Hockey League. The Bearcats won five championships in the MVJHL. Three back to back from 1969-70 to 1971-72. Truro won two more championships in 1973-74 and 1975-76. In 1977 the MVJHL became a Junior "A" league and the Bearcats folded mid season in 1983.
