Trianon Model Collection
The Trianon model collection is a set of high-quality ship models ordered by Napoléon for documentary purposes. History In July 1810 Denis Decrès Denis Decrès (18 June 1761 – 7 December 1820) was an officer of the French Navy and count, later duke of the First Empire. Early career Decrès was born in Châteauvillain, Haute-Marne on 18 June 1761 and joined the Navy at the age of 18, ... ordered 13 models to be constructed specially for the collection, while others, already built, were gathered. The models were built to a luxurious standard, with precious woods such as ebony and ivory used for the sculptures. The ''Républicaine française'' was a 32-gun frigate of the French Navy, of the ''Galathée'' class. The Royal Navy captured her in 1796. The Navy fitted her as a troopship in 1800, but both as a troopship, and earlier as a frigate, she captured several small Spanish and French privateers. She was broken up in 1810. French service Ordered in March 1793 as ''Panthère'', she became ''République française'' in January 1794, and eventually ''Républicaine française'' when commissioned in May, as the name had been attributed to the 120-gun ''République française''. Under Lieutenant François Pitot, she cruised the Atlantic off Brest. On 30 May 1795, she was again renamed to ''Renommée''. Baron Pierre-Jacques-Nicolas Rolland (17 June 1769 – 9 December 1837) was a French naval architect and engineer. Pierre-Jacques-Nicolas Rolland was born on 17 June 1769 in the harbour town of Brest, into the family of Pierre Nicolas Rolland, engineer-constructor of the Brest Port. He followed his father's footsteps and in 1785, at the age of 16 entered the service at Rochefort Port. In 1795 he fought the British fleet at the naval battle of Genoa on board the French ship ''Sans Culotte''.Better known as ''Orient'', as she was named at the Battle of the Nile Ten years later he was already an established engineer and shortly thereafter chief engineer. ''Flore'' was a 44-gun or 40-gun of the French Navy. Service history In 1808, she was part of Ganteaume's squadron that cruised in the Mediterranean. On 12 March 1811, she was part of Bernard Dubourdieu's squadron sailing to raid the British commerce raider base of the island of Lissa. The squadron encountered William Hoste's frigate squadron, leading to the Battle of Lissa. In the ensuing fight, ''Flore'' was distanced by her flagship , which engaged the British flagship , and ran aground. ''Flore'' and ''Bellona'' caught on and engaged ''Amphion'' in a crossfire.
