Travancore Sisters
Travancore Sisters refers to the trio of Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini who were actresses, dancers and performers in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada films. The Travancore sisters learned dancing under Guru Gopinath and Guru T. K. Mahalingam Pillai. Ragini died from cancer in 1976 and Lalitha in 1982. Padmini died in 2006. Few documents relating to them survived except for dozens of films and articles in Indian newspapers. The Travancore Sisters grew up in a joint family tharavadu 'Malaya Cottage' in Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram. The Travancore sisters were nieces of the famous beauty Narayani Pillai Kunjamma, who spurned the king of Travancore in favour of marrying the aristocratic landowner Kesava Pillai of Kandamath and through her related to the actress Sukumari's mother Sathyabhama Amma and the Travancore Royal Family through cousin, Ambika. ''Kannika'' is a 1947 Indian Tamil-language film starring M. S. Sarojini, T. E. Varadan and M. R. Santhanalakshmi. The film was directed and produced by S. M. Sriramulu Naidu. Plot King Paligna is a demon king whose life is imprisoned inside a dove. He constantly sacrifices young women, with a belief that by doing this, his soul will be made immortal. ''Natyarani'' () is a 1949 Tamil-language dance film starring Vasundhara Devi, B. S. Saroja, K. Thavamani Devi and T. S. Balaiah. Plot A swamy (hermit) teaches fine arts like music and dance from his Ashram in a village to students. A young girl named Shanthala from the villages brings him milk every day. May be due to her seeing students training in music and dance in the ashram, Shanthala had a strange dream in which she becomes very famous. Jikki
Pillavalu Gajapathy Krishnaveni (3 November 1935 – 16 August 2004), more famously known as Jikki, was an Indian playback singer from Andhra Pradesh. She sang around 10,000 songs in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and Sinhalese languages. Early life Jikki was born in Chennai on 3 November 1935. Her parents Gajapathi Naidu and Rajakanthamma, a Telugu family, had moved from Chandragiri, near Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh to Chennai for their livelihood. Her uncle, Devaraju Naidu, worked as a music composer with the celebrated Kannada theatre legend and movie pioneer Gubbi Veeranna and this introduced the young Jikki to the music and film world. Career Krishnaveni began her career as a child artist in 1943 and played a minor role in a Telugu movie named ''Panthulamma'', directed by Gudavalli Ramabrahmam. '' Laila Majnu '' is a 1949 Telugu-language historical romance film, based on the Sufi legend of ''Laila-Majnu''. It is produced and directed by P. S. Ramakrishna Rao under the Bharani Pictures banner. It stars Bhanumathi and Akkineni Nageswara Rao, with music composed by C. R. Subburaman. ''Gokuladasi'' () is a 1948 Indian Tamil language film directed and produced by K. Subrahmanyam. The film stars C. Honnappa Bhagavathar and M. V. Rajamma, with T. R. Ramachandran, N. Krishnamurthi, Lalitha and Padmini playing supporting roles. Plot Kamaroopan is a lustful king who faces the curse of Goddess Parvati and is reborn as a common jeweller in the town of Gokulam. The jeweller happens to set his eyes on a ''Devadasi'' named Anuradha and tries to woo her. Anuradha, on the other hand, was a singer-dancer in her previous birth and a devotee of Parvati.
