Trade Unions In Fiji
Fiji is served by a number of trade unions, many of them affiliated with the Fiji Trades Union Congress. The Congress was founded in 1952. In 2008, 32,000 Fijians were members of a union affiliated with the Congress. Fiji Trades Union Congress
The Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) is a trade union organisation in Fiji that was founded in 1952 under the leadership of Pandit Ami Chandra as the Fiji Industrial Workers Congress (FIWC). As the FIWC the organisation was the third federation in Oceania, after the Australian Council of Trade Unions and the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, to join the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. In 1975 the FTUC's membership was 25,000. The FTUC is affiliated to the International Trade Union Confederation. Fiji Islands Council Of Trade Unions
The Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions (FICTU) was established in August, 2002 as a breakaway from and rival to the FTUC. Fifteen unions, which were formerly affiliated to the FTUC, initially joined the new umbrella organisation. The move follows the unions’ disatissfaction with the FTUC led by Senator Felix Anthony, which they see as too closely linked with the Labour Party. The FICTU is led by Maika Namudu, of the Fijian Teachers Association, as president and Attar Singh, of the Fiji Aviation Workers Association, as general secretary. National Farmers Union Of Fiji
The National Farmers Union (''NFU) is one of Fiji's largest trade unions. It was launched in Labasa in July 1978 under the auspices of the Fiji Trades Union Congress, with Mahendra Chaudhry as its first General Secretary. The union was initially based in Vanua Levu but gradually extended its operations to Viti Levu. Early Years as a Vanua Levu based Union Although the union was initially only based in Vanua Levu, it had an immediate impact on Fiji's sugar industry, as it exposed the corruption in allocating newly released cane farming land to Minister's wives. It also successfully objected to the appointment of Government representatives to the Sugar Cane Growers Council. In 1981, the NFU had its first major dispute with the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) when it sought compensation for losses incurred by farmers due to the abnormal closure of the Labasa Mill. Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) is a union representing elementary and secondary education teachers in Fiji. It is a member of the Fiji Trades Union Congress,Neelesh Gounder, "A Long Road to Unity," ''Fiji Times,'' January 12, 2006. and Education International. The FTU was formed as a multi-racial organization. However, in 1960 the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) was founded. The FTA limited its membership to indigenous Fijians.
