Towrang is a closed railway station on the Main South railway line in New South Wales, Australia. A platform opened in the locality in 1869 south of the later station, called ''Mannafields'' after a property of the same name. A later station opened in 1874 north of the initial platform at 208 km south of Central, serving the small Southern highlands town of Towrang Towrang is a village in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia, in Goulburn Mulwaree Council. Main Southern Railway Line, New South Wales
The Main Southern Railway is a major railway in New South Wales, Australia. It runs from Sydney to Albury, near the Victorian border. The line passes through the Southern Highlands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes and Riverina regions. Description of route The Main Southern Railway commences as an electrified pair of tracks in the Sydney metropolitan area. Since 1924, the line branches from the Main Suburban railway line at Lidcombe and runs via Regents Park to Cabramatta, where it rejoins the original route from Granville. The line then heads towards Campbelltown and Macarthur, the current limit of electrification and suburban passenger services. The electrification previously extended to Glenlee colliery, but this was removed following the cessation of electric haulage of freight trains in the 1990s. At the , Towrang had a population of 171. History The town was established in the 19th century, early in the European settlement of New South Wales. The area was once a large producer of fruit for the Sydney market. Towrang railway station on the Main Southern railway line opened in 1869 and was one of the busiest in the state. The station closed in 1974 and has since been removed, after Goulburn outgrew Towrang and fruit production declined. A major stockade for chain-bound convicts and others involved in the construction of the Great South Road was located on the north side of the Hume Highway at Towrang Creek from around 1836 to 1842.
