Town Of Kalgoorlie
The Town of Kalgoorlie was a local government area in Western Australia, centred on the town of Kalgoorlie. It was established as the Municipality of Kalgoorlie on 15 February 1895. It was renamed the Town of Kalgoorlie on 1 July 1961. The municipality was responsible for the construction of the Kalgoorlie Town Hall as its new headquarters in 1907-09, which replaced earlier municipal chambers in Brookman Street. It amalgamated with the Shire of Boulder to form the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder on 15 April 1989. Kalgoorlie Town Hall, 2016
Kalgoorlie is a city in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, located east-northeast of Perth at the end of the Great Eastern Highway. It is sometimes referred to as Kalgoorlie–Boulder, as the surrounding urban area includes the historic townsite of Boulder and the local government area is the City of Kalgoorlie–Boulder. Kalgoorlie-Boulder lies on the traditional lands of the Wangkatja group of peoples.The name "Kalgoorlie" is derived from the Wangai word ''Karlkurla'' or ''Kulgooluh'', meaning "place of the silky pears". The city was established in 1893 during the Western Australian gold rushes. It soon replaced Coolgardie as the largest settlement on the Eastern Goldfields. Kalgoorlie is the ultimate destination of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme and the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail. Robert McKenzie (Australian Politician)
Robert Donald McKenzie (19 March 1865 – 14 May 1928) was an Australian businessman and politician who was a member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1904 to 1916. He was a minister in the first government of Frank Wilson. McKenzie was born in Eaglehawk, Victoria (near Bendigo), to Margaret (née Reid) and Hugh McKenzie. He came to Western Australia in 1894, during the gold rush, and opened a general store at Hannans (near Kalgoorlie). McKenzie later expanded his business, becoming a timber and hardware merchant. He was elected to the Kalgoorlie Municipal Council in 1895, and would serve as Mayor of Kalgoorlie from 1897 to 1898. McKenzie was elected to parliament at the 1904 Legislative Council elections, defeating Arthur Jenkins in North-East Province. It was established as the Municipality of Boulder on 6 August 1897. It was given town status as the Town of Boulder on 1 July 1961. The municipality was responsible for the construction of the Boulder Town Hall as its new headquarters in 1907-08. ''The Australian Jewish News'' (''AJN'') is a newspaper published in Darlinghurst, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Since 2019 it has been a local partner of ''The Times of Israel''. History The ''AJN'' is descended from ''The Hebrew Standard of Australasia'', which was first published on 1 November 1895 in Sydney by founding editor Alfred Harris. In 1953 John Shaiak purchased the newspaper and changed its name to ''The Australian Jewish Times (AJT)''. In 1987, Richard Pratt bought the AJT and merged it with the Melbourne-based ''Australian Jewish News''. From 1990, the newspaper has been published weekly nationally as ''The Australian Jewish News''. The newspaper celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1995 and launched an online edition in 2001. Richard Moore (Australian Politician)
Sir Richard Greenslade Moore (21 June 1878 – 15 September 1966) was an Australian politician who served as Mayor of the Municipality of Kalgoorlie (Town of Kalgoorlie from 1961) between 1937 and 1966. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council between 1932 and 1936. Early life Moore was born in 1878 in Neereman, near Bendigo in the Goldfields region of Victoria to Anne ( Greenslade) and John Moore. His father was a blacksmith and Richard took on his father's trade after finishing school. Move to Western Australia In 1900, Moore moved to Kalgoorlie where he worked as a gold miner. Two years later, he set up a blacksmith operation at Broad Arrow, north of Kalgoorlie. In the following years, Moore moved between Kalgoorlie, Perth, back to Victoria; finally returning to Kalgoorlie towards the end of the decade. Frederick Allsop
Frederick William Allsop (22 September 1865 – 15 September 1932) was an Australian politician who was a Nationalist Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1930 until his death, representing North-East Province. Prior to entering politics he worked as a metallurgist. Allsop was born in Auckland, New Zealand, to Anne (née Jefferies) and William Allsop. His parents moved to Australia when he was an infant and settled in Ballarat, Victoria, where he attended Ballarat High School and the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1893, Allsop moved to South Africa, where he worked as a metallurgical assayer for a Johannesburg-based gold mining firm. He later helped to establish a cyanide plant at Spitzkop (near Lydenburg). Allsop returned to Australia in 1896 and lived in Victoria until 1905, when he moved to Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Sidney Edwin Hocking
Sidney Edwin Hocking (1859–1935) founded ''The Kalgoorlie Miner'' newspaper in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, in 1895. Born in South Australia, he began his career at ''The Adelaide Advertiser'' in 1874 as a general reporter. He began reporting on new mines in South Australia, then travelled to others in New South Wales and Western Australia. When the Kalgoorlie mines began to predominate he moved from Coolgardie and bought the weekly newspaper ''Kalgoorlie Western Argus'', later launching the daily ''Kalgoorlie Miner''. In 1900 he married 21-year-old Effie Fenn and they had eight children. Career Hocking had a reputation as a good boss in Kalgoorlie, which no doubt contributed to his election as a councillor and later mayor of the Municipality of Kalgoorlie. He was involved in the Kalgoorlie Racing Club and Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Fresh Air League which sent goldfields children to the coast for holidays. Norbert Keenan
Sir Norbert Michael Keenan QC (30 January 1864 – 24 April 1954) was an Australian lawyer and politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1905 to 1911 and again from 1930 to 1950. He was the leader of the Nationalist Party from 1933 to 1938, during the time when it was the junior partner in the coalition with the Country Party. Keenan had earlier served as a minister in the government of Newton Moore (as attorney-general) and the second government of Sir James Mitchell. Miles Staniforth Cater Smith, (25 February 1869 – 14 January 1934) was an Australian politician, public servant and explorer. He served as a Senator for Western Australia from 1901 to 1906 and was later a senior public servant in the Territory of Papua and the Northern Territory of Australia. Early life Smith was born on 25 February 1869 in Kingston, Victoria. He was the son of English immigrants Margaret Gomersall () and William John Smith. He was raised on his father's farming property and attended St Arnaud Grammar School in St Arnaud. He briefly studied engineering at the University of Melbourne and then began working for Goldsbrough Mort & Co in Melbourne.
