Tovey Chair Of Music
The Tovey Professorship of Music was established as a named chair at the University of Edinburgh by an ordinance (no. 550) approved by the University Court in 1965 and by the Privy Council the following year. The first person appointed to the chair was Michael Tilmouth, in 1971. He died in 1987. The next appointment was Simon Frith Simon Webster Frith (born 1946) is a British sociomusicologist and former rock critic who specializes in popular music culture. Michael Tilmouth
Michael Tilmouth (30 November 1930 – 12 November 1987) was an English musicologist. Biography Born in Grimsby, Michael Tilmouth was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, graduating in 1954 and completing his doctoral studies in 1960 with his thesis ''Chamber music in England, 1675–1720''. He was appointed an assistant lecturer at the University of Glasgow in 1959; promotion to lecturer followed in 1962, before he was appointed to the new Tovey Chair of Music at the University of Edinburgh in 1971. Simon Frith
Simon Webster Frith (born 1946) is a British sociomusicologist and former rock critic who specializes in popular music culture. He is Tovey Chair of Music at University of Edinburgh. Career As a student, he read PPE at Oxford and earned a doctorate in sociology from UC Berkeley. He is the author of many influential books, including ''The Sociology of Rock'' (Constable, 1978), ''Sound Effects: Youth, Leisure and the Politics of Rock 'n' Roll'' (Pantheon, 1981), '' Art into Pop'' (Methuen, 1987 – written with Howard Horne), ''Music for Pleasure: Essays on the Sociology of Pop'' (Cambridge University Press, 1988), and'' Performing Rites: On the Value of Popular Music'' (Oxford University Press, 1996).
