Alain Resnais
Alain Resnais (; 3 June 19221 March 2014) was a French film director and screenwriter whose career extended over more than six decades. After training as a film editor in the mid-1940s, he went on to direct a number of short films which included ''Night and Fog'' (1956), an influential documentary about the Nazi concentration camps.Ephraim Katz, ''The International Film Encyclopedia''. Phil Davis (cartoonist)
Philip Davis (March 4, 1906 – 16 December 1964) was an American artist who illustrated ''Mandrake the Magician'', written by Lee Falk. Davis was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Growing up with one sister and one brother, Davis became interested in drawing when he was six years old. "I had a mania for parades," he recalled. "I drew every parade I could see. My family neither encouraged nor discouraged me. They just accepted my dark fate." While attending Washington University in St. Louis, Davis had a part-time job as a draftsman with the technical department of the local telephone company. By 1928, he was working in the art department of the ''St. Louis Post-Dispatch''. He left the newspaper to do magazine illustrations and advertising art. In 1933, Davis met St. Louis advertising agency executive Lee Falk, and the two began their collaboration on ''Mandrake the Magician''. Falk asked Davis to do a dozen panels on spec. Joseph Rovan
Joseph Adolphe Rovan (born Joseph Adolph Rosenthal in Munich, Germany on July 25, 1918, died July 27, 2004), was a French philosopher and politician, and is considered a spiritual father of post-war Europe. Initially born into the Jewish faith, on Whitsunday 1944 he was received into the Catholic Church. Rovan was active in the French Resistance during World War II and was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Médaille de la Résistance for his services. In 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo and survived 10 months in the Dachau concentration camp. It was during this time that he converted to Catholicism. In 1945, after his return to France, he wrote in the magazin''Esprit''the article "L'Allemagne de nos mérites," where he suggested that the creation of a democratic Germany on the ruins of the Third Reich was the responsibility of the Allies. François-Régis Bastide
François-Régis Bastide (; 1 July 1926; Biarritz – 16 April 1996; Paris) was a French writer, diplomat, politician, and radio host. Early life Bastide was born in Biarritz in the French Basque Country on 1 July 1926 and attended school in Bayonne. In October 1944 he joined the 2nd Armored Division led by General Leclerc and participated in the last phase of the WWII Western Front operations. Literary career Bastide published his first book, the novel ''Lettre de Bavière'', in 1947. He continued to publish books regularly and won the Grand Prix de la Critique for his 1953 biographical essay ''Saint-Simon par lui même'' about Louis de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon and the Prix Femina for his 1956 novel '' Les Adieux''. Lee Falk (), born Leon Harrison Gross (; April 28, 1911 – March 13, 1999), was an American cartoonist, writer, theater director, and producer, best known as the creator of the comic strips ''Mandrake the Magician'' and ''The Phantom''. At the height of their popularity, these strips attracted over 100 million readers every day. Falk also wrote short stories, and he contributed to a series of paperback novels about ''The Phantom''. A playwright and play (theater), theatrical director/producer, Falk directed actors such as Marlon Brando, Charlton Heston, Paul Newman, Chico Marx and Ethel Waters. Life and career Falk was born in St. Louis, Missouri, where he spent his boyhood and his youth. Pierre Braunberger (29 July 1905, Paris – 16 November 1990, Aubervilliers) was a French producer, executive producer, and actor. Biography Born into a family of physicians, Braunberger at the age of seven was already determined not have the same life as his father, and not to take up medicine as a career.
