Tourism In Nauru
Nauru is a small, isolated western Pacific island, which lacks many of the tourist facilities of some of its larger neighbours, such as Fiji, the Cook Islands, or even New Caledonia. Tourism is not a major contributor to the economy, with only around 200 tourists a year visiting the island. Getting to Nauru Nauru International Airport is the sole airport on the island. Nauru Airlines, formerly known as Air Nauru and Our Airline, is the only passenger airline operating to the island. It operates four passenger (and one cargo) Boeing 737-300 aircraft out of Brisbane, Australia, and provides an air link to Nadi, Honiara, Tarawa, Majuro, and Brisbane. Brisbane Airport is the primary international airport serving Brisbane and South East Queensland. The economy of Nauru is tiny, based on a population in 2019 of only 11,550 people. The economy has historically been based on phosphate mining. With primary phosphate reserves exhausted by the end of the 2010s, Nauru has sought to diversify its sources of income. Wreck diving is recreational diving where the wreckage of ships, aircraft and other artificial structures are explored. Although most wreck dive sites are at shipwrecks, there is an increasing trend to scuttle retired ships to create artificial reef sites. Scuba diving is a mode of underwater diving whereby divers use breathing equipment that is completely independent of a surface air supply. Aiwo (rarely Aiue, in earlier times ''Yangor'') is a district in the Pacific country of Nauru. Jarrit Morpak is the city's mayor, elected in 2008. It belongs to Aiwo Constituency.
