Thomas Totty
Rear Admiral Thomas Totty (1746 – 2 June 1802) was a Welsh naval officer of the Napoleonic Wars. Life Totty was born at Holywell, Flintshire, and was baptised at Holywell parish church on 24 January 1746. He inherited a large farmhouse in the town of Flint which later became Cornist Hall, from his mother's side. His father was an ironmonger and mine owner and had 21 other children – Thomas was one of 18 who survived infancy (another was his youngest brother Hugh, chaplain to George IV, who died aged 101). He took his examination for lieutenant in 1766 and so appears to have joined the navy about 1760 (the exam was only open to those of six years' service or more). He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 30 April 1775 onboard HMS ''Mercury'', then in Boston harbour during the American Revolutionary War's second week and possibly one of the ships bombarding American positions in the run-up to the battle of Bunker Hill. Charles Henry Totty (September 7, 1873, Shropshire, England - December 11, 1939, Orange, New Jersey) was a renowned horticulturist who was responsible for establishing the First International Flower Show in New York City. He owned and operated the Charles H. Totty Company of Madison, New Jersey, a nursery known for offering a wide variety of chrysanthemums and roses. Biography Totty was born in England in 1873, and came to the United States in 1893, settling in Madison three years later. The company issued an annual flower and plant catalog called 'Tottys' for many years and ran a successful mail order business as well a store located in New York City at 4 East 53rd Street. The catalog was known for its wide selection of prize winning chrysanthemums such as 'Patricia Grace', 'Mrs. Henry Evans', 'White Cheifton', and 'Amaterasu'. 1Hop (formerly, Top Totty) is an English golden ale beer with a 4% alcohol content. It is brewed by Slater's Ales in Staffordshire, England. It was initially brewed as a summer ale. It gained nationwide attention after being banned from the House of Commons. History 1Hop was first brewed as Top Totty and sold in Staffordshire in 1997. In 2006, Top Totty won the Society of Independent Brewers Midlands Gold award for best specialty beer and Bronze for the overall SIBA Midlands Beer Competition.
