A Tory () is a person who holds a political philosophy known as Toryism, based on a British version of traditionalism and conservatism, which upholds the supremacy of social order as it has evolved in the English culture throughout history. The Tory ethos has been summed up with the phrase "God, King, and Country". Tories are monarchists, were historically of a high church Anglican religious heritage, and opposed to the liberalism of the Whig faction. The philosophy originates from the Cavalier faction, a royalist group during the English Civil War. The Tories political faction that emerged in 1681 was a reaction to the Whig-controlled Parliaments that succeeded the Cavalier Parliament. As a political term, Tory was an insult derived from the Irish language, that later entered English politics during the Exclusion Crisis of 1678–1681. Tory Michael Pragassa (born 14 October 1996) is a Kenyan swimmer. He competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but did not qualify for the semi-finals of any of his events, finishing 26th in both the 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke heats, and 39th in the 50m freestyle heats. Tory Nyhaug (born 17 April 1992) is a Canadian racing cyclist who represents Canada in BMX. He represented Canada at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics in the men's BMX event. Tory Steven James (born May 18, 1973) is a former American football cornerback who played eleven seasons in the National Football League (NFL). James attended Archbishop Shaw High School before going to college at Louisiana State University, and was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 1996 NFL Draft. His career was endangered by a serious knee injury suffered in the first preseason game of the 1997 season. James tore the patellar tendon in his right knee and missed the entire season.
