Torre Del Gran San Pietro
Torre del Gran San Pietro (french: Tour du Grand-Saint-Pierre) is a mountain in the Gran Paradiso massif, a sub-group of the Graian Alps, with an elevation of 3,692 m. It is located between Piedmont and Aosta Valley, in northern Italy, near the Cogne Valley. First ascent In 1865 Amé Gorret, Martino Baretti, and J. P. Carrel reached a subsidiary summit on the crest of the mountain, which they subsequently dubbed ''Pic du Retour''. Two years later, Daniel Ballay and Michel Payot guided Douglas Freshfield, C. C. Tucker, T. H. Carson, and J. H. Backhouse to the main summit. The Graian Alps (french: Alpes grées ; it, Alpi Graie ) are a mountain range in the western part of the Alps. Etymology The name ''Graie'' comes from the ''Graioceli'' Celtic tribe, which dwelled in the area surrounding the Mont Cenis pass and the Viù valley. Amé Gorret
Amé Gorret (1836-1907), known in his native Aosta Valley as the "Abbé Gorret" (''"Father Gorret"''), was a priest and Alpinist (mountaineer). He was a member of the group which in 1865 undertook the second successful ascent of the Matterhorn, which was the first such ascent from the Italian side. Throughout his life he enjoyed a reputation for being unconventional, and was therefore frequently assigned to remote mountain parishes. Biography Early years Amé Gorret was born on 25 October 1836 at Valtournenche in the Aosta Valley which at that time was in the Kingdom of Sardinia. Amé was the son of Jean-Antoine Gorret, a mountain guide, and of Marie-Véronique Carrel. Douglas William Freshfield (27 April 1845 – 9 February 1934) was a British lawyer, mountaineer and author, who edited the ''Alpine Journal ''from 1872 to 1880. He was an active member of the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club (UK), Alpine Club and served as President of both organizations. He was also the first president of the Geographical Association, being one of the people at the first meeting where the Association was founded. He served from 1897 to 1911, the longest serving president in the history of the Association. Mountains Of Aosta Valley
A mountain is an elevated portion of the Earth's crust, generally with steep sides that show significant exposed bedrock.
