Tony Darden (American Football)
Tony Darden (born August 11, 1975) is a former American football defensive back who played National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Texas Tech. Early life and high school Darden was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and grew up in San Antonio, Texas, where he attended Oliver Wendell Holmes High School. As a senior he passed for 3,236 yards and 45 touchdowns. College career Darden was a member of the Texas Tech Red Raiders for five seasons, redshirting as a true freshman. He began his redshirt freshman season as a quarterback, starting the first three games of the season and splitting duties with Zebbie Lethridge before moving to wide receiver after five games. Darden changed positions again to cornerback before his junior season. As a senior, he recorded 32 tackles with four passes broken up and two interceptions and was named second team 1997 All-Big 12 Conference. In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. They are distinguished from the other two sets of defensive players, the defensive linemen who play directly on the line of scrimmage, and the linebackers, who play in the middle of the defense, between the defensive line and the defensive backs. Among the defensive backs, there are two main types, cornerbacks, which play nearer the line of scrimmage and the sideline, whose main role is to cover the opposing team's wide receivers, and the Safety (gridiron football position), safeties, who play further back near the center of the field, and who act as the last line of defense. 1998 NFL Draft
The 1998 NFL draft was the procedure by which National Football League teams selected amateur college football players. It is officially known as the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting. The draft was held April 18–19, 1998, at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The league also held a supplemental draft after the regular draft and before the regular season. Before the draft, there was much debate in the media on if the Indianapolis Colts would select Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf with the first overall pick. Both were considered excellent prospects and future franchise quarterbacks: Leaf was considered to have more upside and a stronger throwing arm, whereas Manning was considered a polished prospect who was NFL ready and more mature.
