Tonsley Railway Station
Tonsley railway station is located on the Flinders line in the south-western Adelaide suburb of Tonsley, 12.2 kilometres from Adelaide station. The original station was 13 kilometres from Adelaide, and was the terminus of the line from its opening in 1966 until the station's closure in 2019; the station was then relocated to its current position and opened in 2020. History The original station opened on 1 July 1966 when the Tonsley line opened. Trains operated between 07:00 and 19:00 on weekdays, with no weekend services. Tonsley, South Australia
Tonsley is a southern suburb of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. History The suburb of Tonsley was created on 27 January 2017 by dividing the suburb of Clovelly Park in half. The southern part of the suburb was separated from Clovelly Park and named Tonsley at that time. Named after England's Tonsley Hall, it includes the former vehicle assembly plant, which was often called ''Tonsley Park''. The Chrysler Australia car plant was opened in 1964. The factory was taken over by Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) in 1980 and closed in 2008. The former vehicle factory is being developed as the Tonsley Innovation District with light industry, campuses of TAFE and Flinders University as well as residential development. Flinders Railway Station
Flinders railway station is the terminus of the Flinders line in the southern Adelaide suburb of Bedford Park. It serves the adjacent Flinders Medical Centre precinct and Flinders University. History A rail extension to Flinders Medical Centre had been mooted in July 2008, with the State Government commissioning a feasibility study, but nothing eventuated. In May 2016, as part of the Liberal Party's campaign for the federal election later that year, $43 million in funding was promised towards extending the Tonsley line. The extension, known as the ''Flinders Link Project'', was built concurrently with the adjacent Darlington Upgrade on the Southern Expressway and is located to the east of the expressway and local service roads; a rail overpass and pedestrian bridge connects the existing rail corridor and the new station. Clovelly Park railway station was a railway station located on the Flinders line in the south-western Adelaide suburb of Mitchell Park. History Clovelly Park station opened on 1 July 1966 when the Tonsley line was branched from the Noarlunga Centre line at Ascot Park. The station was located immediately north of the level crossing at Alawoona Avenue and was named ''Chrysler Park'' after the adjoining car factory. Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) is a major public tertiary hospital and teaching school, co-located with Flinders University and the 130 bed Flinders Private Hospital located at Bedford Park, South Australia. It opened in 1976. It serves as the trauma centre for the southern suburbs, and parts of the Adelaide Hills. South Road and its southern section as Main South Road outside of Adelaide is a major north–south conduit connecting Adelaide and the Fleurieu Peninsula, in South Australia. It is one of Adelaide's most important arterial and bypass roads.
