Toni Grand
Toni Grand (born Antoine Pierre Charles Grand; 2 February 1935 – 29 November 2005) was a French sculptor. In his early career he was associated with the Supports/Surfaces group. He represented France at the 1982 Venice Biennale and his work has been shown in major museums. Biography Grand was born and grew up in Gallargues-le-Montueux, a village in Gard. He went to college at the Armangaud House in Aigues-Vives, where he met Claude Viallat, a member of the Supports/Surfaces group. He studied literature in Montpellier and then studied for a year at the School of Fine Arts. He met at this time his future wife, Amélie Vasseur. He began sculpting in 1955. In 1967, Grand exhibited at the 5th Biennale de Paris. He taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, until 1976, then in Marseille. Supports/Surfaces
Supports/Surfaces was an art movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s which came out of the south of France. It has significantly impacted contemporary art. The group combined a material examination of the formal elements of painting with a rigorous political and philosophical stance. The group radically re-imagined the place of art in society and formally deconstructed and examined the material components of painting. École des Beaux-Arts (; ) refers to a number of influential art schools in France. The term is associated with the Beaux-Arts style in architecture and city planning that thrived in France and other countries during the late nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth century. Simon Hantaï
Simon Hantaï (7 December 1922, Biatorbágy, Hungary – Paris, 12 September 2008; took French nationality in 1966) is a painter generally associated with abstract art. Biography After studying at the Budapest School of Fine Art, he traveled through Italy on foot and moved to France in 1948. André Breton wrote the preface to his first exhibition catalogue in Paris, but in 1955 Hantaï broke with the surrealist group over Breton's refusal to accept any similarity between the surrealist technique of automatic writing and Jackson Pollock's methods of action painting. A retrospective of his work was held at the Centre Pompidou in 1976, and in 1982 he represented France at the Venice Biennale. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes () is the fine arts museum of Nîmes. Site It was founded in 1821 and originally housed in the Maison Carrée. Since 1907 it has been housed in a building designed by the architect Max Raphel in Square de la Mandragore on rue de la Cité Foulc.
