''Tom and Catherine'' is an album by John Miles, released in 1999. The album is the soundtrack to a musical about the life of the novelist Catherine Cookson and her husband Tom Cookson. The musical was written by playwright Tom Kelly, who asked Miles to write music for it (they had already collaborated on ''Machine Gunners''). John Miles (born John Errington; 23 April 1949 – 5 December 2021) was a British rock singer, guitarist and keyboard player best known for his 1976 top 3 UK hit single "Music" and his frequent appearances at Night of the Proms. He won the "Outstanding Musical Achievement" award at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards. He released 10 albums from 1976 to 1999 and was also the touring musician for Tina Turner in 1987. It was his first album in eight years, due to being involved in several other projects, such as an album with Jimmy Page, an album with Joe Cocker, singing several tracks on albums by the Alan Parsons Project and touring with Tina Turner. Dame Catherine Ann Cookson, DBE (''née'' McMullen; 20 June 1906 – 11 June 1998) was a British writer. She is in the top 20 of the most widely read British novelists, with sales topping 100 million, while retaining a relatively low profile in the world of celebrity writers. Her books were inspired by her deprived youth in South Shields (historically part of County Durham), North East England, the setting for her novels. With 104 titles written in her own name or two other pen names, she is one of the most prolific British novelists.
