Tom O'Neill-Thorne
Tom O'Neill-Thorne (born 8 April 1997) is a 3.0 point wheelchair basketball player from Australia. He was part of the Rollers team that won the 2014 Incheon World Wheelchair Basketball Championship. He was a member of the Rollers team that competed at 2020 Summer Paralympics, his second Games. Biography Tom O'Neill-Thorne was born on 8 April 1997, with arthrogryposis multiplex, a congenital condition, which he describes succinctly as: "my legs didn’t grow properly". By the time he was two years old, he required a wheelchair, but watching the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney on television, he decided that he wanted to become an athlete. Basketball O'Neill-Thorne took up wheelchair basketball when he was nine, when a local competition was established. The point guard (PG), also called the one or the point, is one of the five Basketball positions, positions in a regulation basketball game. A point guard has perhaps the most specialized role of any position. Point guards are expected to run the team's offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the right player at the right time. IWBF U23 World Wheelchair Basketball Championship
The IWBF U23 World Wheelchair Basketball Championship is an international wheelchair basketball competition contested by the men's and women's under-23 national teams of the members of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation ( IWBF), the sport's global governing body. The event is held every four years. The first official wheelchair basketball world championship for men under-23 was held in 1997 hosted by Toronto, Canada. Only seven nations took part at the tournament. At the next championship held 2001 in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil, the number of participating nations were six. The 2005 Championship in Birmingham, United Kingdom became a full tournament attended by twelve nations from four zones. Wheelchair Basketball At The 2020 Summer Paralympics – Men's Tournament
The 2020 Summer Paralympics men's tournament in Tokyo began on 25 August and was ended on the 5 September 2021. The matches were played at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza and the Ariake Arena. This was the fourteenth edition of the tournament since the tournament debut at the 1968 Summer Paralympics in Tel Aviv. Twelve teams were separated into two groups of six with the top four qualifying through to the knockout stage of the competition. From there it would be a knockout format which would lead to the gold medal match.
