Tom Banks (American Football)
Thomas Banks (born August 20, 1948) is a former American football center who played ten seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Banks played college football for the Auburn Tigers, and was then selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1970 NFL Draft. He played for the Cardinals from 1971 through 1980, sitting out the 1970 season due to a knee injury. Banks was a four-time Pro Bowl selection, and played a total of 116 NFL games, missing all but one game of the 1974 season after sustaining a knee injury in the season opener that required surgery. Banks later played with the Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League in 1983 and 1984. In 1999, Banks was named to the 50th Anniversary Senior Bowl All-Time Team, having played in the 1970 edition of the game. The 1970 National Football League Draft was the 35th National Football League Draft and the first of the league's modern era, following the merger of the National Football League with the American Football League. It was held on January 27–28, 1970, at the Belmont Plaza Hotel in New York City, New York. The first overall pick of the draft was quarterback Terry Bradshaw from Louisiana Tech University, who was taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Senior Bowl is a post-season college football all-star game played annually in late January or early February in Mobile, Alabama, which showcases the best NFL Draft prospects of those players who have completed their college eligibility. The United States Football League (USFL) was a professional American football league that played for three seasons, 1983 through 1985. The league played a spring/summer schedule in each of its active seasons. The 1986 season was scheduled to be played in the autumn/winter, directly competing against the long-established National Football League (NFL). However, the USFL ceased operations before that season was scheduled to begin. The ideas behind the USFL were conceived in 1965 by New Orleans businessman David Dixon, who saw a market for a professional football league that would play in the summer, when the National Football League and college football were in their off-season.
