''Today's Children'' was a name shared by two thematically related American radio soap operas created and written by Irna Phillips, the earliest of which was her first nationally networked series. 1933-1938 series The original series, which debuted on September 11, 1933, revolved around the large Moran clan, headed by widow Mary "Mother" Moran, who was voiced by Phillips herself. Mother Moran had three adult children—Terry, Frances, and Eileen—whose troubles she dealt with using what promotional materials called "warm-hearted understanding and a common-sense philosophy." The creation of the series was a direct result of Phillips' resignation from her pioneering WGN series ''Painted Dreams'' when the station refused to allow her to take the program to a network. ''Painted Dreams'' is an American radio soap opera that premiered on WGN (AM), WGN radio, Chicago, on October 20, 1930 and last aired in July 1943. It is widely considered by scholars of the genre to be the first daytime soap opera or drama-by-installment serial. The first to be broadcast in daytime over a radio network would be Clara, Lu, 'n Em, ''Clara, Lu 'n Em'', two years later. In 1930 radio station WGN (AM), WGN asked Irna Phillips, who worked for them as an actress, to create a 15-minute daily show "about a family," to air during the day. ''Painted Dreams'' was the result. Phillips wrote and acted in the show until 1932 when she asked WGN to sell the show to a national broadcaster. Irna Phillips
Irna Phillips (July 1, 1901 – December 23, 1973) was an American scriptwriter, screenwriter, casting agent and actress. She is best remembered for pioneering a format of the daytime soap opera in the United States geared specifically toward women. Phillips created, produced, and wrote several radio and television daytime serials throughout her career, including ''Guiding Light'', ''As the World Turns'', and '' Another World''. She was also a mentor to several other pioneers of the American daytime soap opera, including Agnes Nixon and William J. Bell. Personal life Phillips was one of 10 children born to a German-Jewish family in Chicago. Her father died when she was 8, leaving her mother alone to raise the children.
