Toby The Pup
Toby the Pup is an animated cartoon character created by animators Sid Marcus, Dick Huemer, and Art Davis. He starred in a series of early sound shorts produced by Charles B. Mintz for RKO Radio Pictures. The series lasted from 1930 to 1931. Twelve cartoons were produced, though only seven still survive today. The character was voiced by Dick Huemer. Toby can be seen dancing in one of the scenes of the movie, ''Cool World''. History In 1930, Charles Mintz, while simultaneously producing the Krazy Kat cartoon series for Columbia, decided to create an additional series to be distributed through RKO Radio Pictures. He hired two Fleischer animators, Dick Huemer and Sid Marcus and assigned them to work with Art Davis to create a new series. Hallowe'en (1931 Film)
''Hallowe'en'' is a short animated film distributed by RKO Radio Pictures, and stars Toby the Pup. The film is the third-to-last cartoon in the series. Plot At a Halloween costume party, a jolly Toby dances around. He kisses several girls but each reacts with dismay and runs away. Tessie confronts Toby, who kisses her a few times and she slaps him. She then complains to Toby about trying to spoil her party, and threatens to tell his mother about it. To placate her, Toby offers to play the piano. He plays while the other guests listen, including a goat who eats various household objects, including the piano keys. A church bell chimes and Toby warns everyone that this is the witching hour. Meanwhile, a witch and various supernatural creatures are flying above. They fall through the chimney and frighten the party guests. Toby fights with several ghosts. Down South (film)
Down South is an animated short film distributed by RKO Radio Pictures, and is the ninth of the twelve Toby the Pup cartoons. The title comes from a 1901 song which is featured in the cartoon. Plot Toby is the pilot of a paddle steamer. One day he docks his boat at a harbor to pick up passengers. As he has to shake hands with just about everyone who comes aboard, Toby struggles to keep a smile on his face. When the boat finally leaves the harbor, the passengers are treated to some entertainment as Tessie sings the song "Mississippi Mud" at the center of the main deck. Everybody else sings along too, and stomps as well. But as they stomp harder and harder, the boat starts to shake. The shake is so strong that almost everybody, including Toby, gets thrown overboard.
