''To Dorothy a Son'' is a 1954 British comedy film directed by Muriel Box and starring Shelley Winters, John Gregson and Peggy Cummins. Known in the U.S. as ''Cash on Delivery'', it is based on the 1950 play ''To Dorothy, a Son'' by Roger MacDougall which had enjoyed a lengthy run in the West End theatre, West End. It was shot at Elstree Studios near London with sets designed by the art director George Provis. It was distributed in America by RKO Pictures in January 1956. Premise In order to receive a large inheritance, an American woman travels to Britain to prevent her ex-husband having any more children. Muriel Box
Violette Muriel Box, Baroness Gardiner, (22 September 1905 – 18 May 1991) was an English screenwriter and director, Britain's most prolific female director, having directed 12 feature films and one featurette. Her screenplay for ''The Seventh Veil'' (co-written with husband Sydney Box) won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Life and career Born Violette Muriel Baker in Tolworth, Surrey, in 1905, and educated at Surbiton High School. After her attempts at acting and dancing proved fruitless, she accepted work as a continuity girl for Associated British Picture Corporation, British International Pictures. In 1935, she met and married journalist Sydney Box, with whom she collaborated on nearly forty plays with mainly female roles for amateur theatre groups. George Provis
George Provis (1901–1989) was a British art director who worked on over a hundred films during a lengthy career. He began his career working on quota quickies during the 1930s. Alfie Bass (born Abraham Basalinsky, 10 April 1916 – 16 July 1987) was an English actor. He was born in Bethnal Green, London, the youngest in a Jewish family with ten children; his parents had left Russia many years before he was born. Martin Miller, born Johann Rudolph Müller (2 September 1899 – 26 August 1969) was a Czech-Austrian character actor who played many small roles in British films and television series from the early 1940s until his death. Ronald George Hinings Adams (31 December 1896 – 28 March 1979), known professionally as Ronald Adam, was a British officer of the RFC and RAF, an actor on stage and screen, and a successful theatre manager. Early life Adam was born in Bromyard, Herefordshire on 31 December 1896, the son of Blake Adams and his wife Mona Robin. His parents and grandparents were all in the theatrical profession. John Warren (actor)
John Warren (1916–1977) was the stage and pen name of a British screenwriter and support actor. Specialising in comedy writing, he worked with several figures at the forefront of British comedy, such as Tommy Cooper, Peter Sellers, Dick Emery and Mike and Bernie Winters. He had several screenwriting projects with film director Val Guest whom he first encountered as an actor in 1948. Life He was born John (Jack) Warner in England on 13 November 1916. In the Second World War he served in the Royal Navy. Following discharge he pursued a career in films but only served in minor roles. He did however make many contacts and moved into scriptwriting in the late 50s, having considerably more success in this field. He died on 9 February 1977 in Kingston upon Thames. Maurice Harington Kaufmann (29 June 1927 – 21 September 1997) was a British actor of stage, film and television, who specialised in whodunits and horror films, from 1954 to 1981, when he retired.
