Tinsel
Tinsel is a type of decorative material that mimics the effect of ice, consisting of thin strips of sparkling material attached to a thread. When in long narrow strips not attached to thread, it is called "lametta", and emulates icicles. It was originally a metallic garland for Christmas decoration. The modern production of tinsel typically involves plastic, and is used particularly to decorate Christmas trees. It may be hung from ceilings or wrapped around statues, lampposts, and so on. Modern tinsel was invented in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1610, and was originally made of shredded silver. According to the ''Concise Oxford Dictionary'', the word is from the Old French word ''estincele'', meaning "sparkle". History In the 16th-century the word "tinsel" was used for a variety of lightweight fabrics with a metallic effect made with silk and gold and silver thread. These tinsel fabrics were used in elite cothes, masque costume, and for heraldric banners and flags. Elizabeth of York b ...

Tinsel (codename)
The codename Tinsel referred to a type of equipment carried by RAF bombers and used for jamming Luftwaffe night-fighter controller's speech radio-frequencies during the Second World War. The equipment consisted of an audio microphone mounted inside one of the bomber's engine nacelles, the output of which fed into the aircraft's standard T1154 radio transmitter. The wireless operator could listen in to the frequencies used by the defending forces and then, when he heard a German transmission, tune his transmitter into the Luftwaffe frequency and transmit the amplified engine-noise on the same frequency, thus jamming the enemy transmission. Although not very effective as a jammer, the noise produced merely acted as background noise to the transmitted speech, Tinsel did have the effect of making the night-fighter crew's job of distinguishing the instructions received from the ground more difficult. Tinsel (novel)
''Tinsel'' is a 1979 novel written by William Goldman. It was the third of a four-book deal he had with Delacorte Press after ''Marathon Man'' and ''Magic''. He called it "my Hollywood novel." Background Goldman had gone through an intense period of work writing screenplays and realised it had been two years since he wrote anything that was just for him, so decided to write a novel. He says he began writing ''Tinsel'' on April Fools' Day 1978 and finished it five months later. Goldman actually started to write two novels at the same time, both about Hollywood. He would work three pages on one, three pages on the other, and said at the end of the first week the second novel, which became ''Tinsel'' "was working alright, so I just gave up on the other". He finished ''Tinsel'' in August. Goldman said in a 1979 interview that he was motivated to write the novel to explore the treatment of women in Hollywood: There are a couple of basic truths about this town. One is that nobody knows ...

Exiles (Malibu Comics)
The Ultraverse is a defunct comic book imprint published by the American company Malibu Comics which is currently owned by Marvel Comics. The Ultraverse is a shared universe in which a variety of characters – known within the comics as Ultras – acquired super-human abilities. History The Ultraverse line was launched by Malibu Comics during the "comics boom" of the early 1990s, when a number of new and existing publishers introduced new universes featuring superheroes, debuting in June 1993 with ongoing series ''Prime'', '' Hardcase'' and ''The Strangers''. The project included writers Mike W. Barr, Steve Englehart, Steve Gerber, James D. Hudnall, Gerard Jones, James Robinson, Len Strazewski, and Larry Niven. It emphasized tight continuity between the various series, making extensive use of crossovers, in which a story that began in one series would be continued in the next-shipping issue of another series. Various promotions for special editions or limited-print stories als ...

Tinsel Print
A tinsel print is an example of one of two types of print, where tinsel is added after printing, for decorative effect. The first is a rare type of old master print parts of which are decorated with small thin shiny fragments of metal or quartz crystal applied to glue. Gold leaf fragments were used on some, and colour was applied before the tinsel. Arthur Mayger Hind cites fewer than ten examples as being "practically all whose location is known... all seem to date between about 1430 and 1460". All are religious woodcuts, and probably German in origin,An Introduction to a History of Woodcut, Arthur M. Hind, pp171-2, Houghton Mifflin Co. 1935 (in USA), reprinted Dover Publications, 1963 ; Grove perhaps from Augsburg. They intended to imitate fabric, which was also the intention of the related "flock prints", printed in glue on paper that had been impressed on fabrics, and then sprinkled with chopped wool. The second type are popular prints, mainly British, produced in the earl ...

Tinsel Wire
Tinsel wire is a type of electrical wire used for applications that require high mechanical flexibility but low current-carrying capacity. Tinsel wire is commonly used in cords of telephones, handsets, headphones, and small electrical appliances. It is far more resistant to metal fatigue failure than either stranded wire or solid wire. Construction Tinsel wire is produced by wrapping several strands of thin metal foil around a flexible nylon or textile core. Because the foil is very thin, the bend radius imposed on the foil is much greater than the thickness of the foil, leading to a low probability of metal fatigue. Meanwhile, the core provides high tensile strength without impairing flexibility. Typically, multiple tinsel wires are jacketed with an insulating layer to form one conductor. A cord is formed from several conductors in either a round profile or a flat cable. Connections Tinsel wire is commonly connected to equipment with crimped terminal lugs that pierce the in ...
