Timeline Of Terrorism In Egypt (2013–present)
In July 2013, at the same time as mass protests began against the 3 July coup d'état which deposed Mohamed Morsi, and in parallel with the escalation of the already ongoing jihadist insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula, pro-Muslim Brotherhood militants started violent attacks against policemen and soldiers in Central and Western Egypt. In the following months, new Islamist armed groups were created to reinstate Islamist rule in Egypt, like Soldiers of Egypt and the Popular Resistance Movement. Since 2013, violence in mainland Egypt has escalated and developed into a low-level Islamist insurgency against the Egyptian government. Egyptian Crisis (2011–2014)
The Egyptian Crisis is a period that started with the Egyptian revolution of 2011 and ended with the installation of a counterrevolutionary regime under the presidency of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in 2014. It was a tumultuous three years of political and social unrest, characterized by mass protests, a series of popular elections, deadly clashes, and military reinforcement. Hesham Ali Ashmawy Mos'ad Ibrahim ( ar, هشام عشماوي مسعد إبراهيم; 1978 – March 4, 2020) was a convicted terrorist who previously was an Egyptian Army officer, suspected by the government of having orchestrated and been involved in a number of terrorist attacks on security targets and state institutions, including the 2014 Farafra ambush and the 2015 assassination of Prosecutor general Hisham Barakat. Ashmawy joined the military in 1996 and eventually became an officer in the Sa'ka Forces, Thunderbolt unit. He showed increasing signs of radicalization over the years, which was further aggravated by his father's death in 2010. Accusations of spreading extremist thought and of incitement against the Egyptian Armed Forces led to his eventual dismissal from the military in 2011 under circumstances that remain unclear. Colonel Ahmed Mansy ( ar, أحمد منسي, 1978–2017) was the commander of Egypt's Sa'ka Forces ( Special Forces) Thunderbolt Battalion 103, who was killed in action with several other members of his battalion on Friday, July 7, 2017, in a violent terrorist attack on an ambush in North Sinai's al-Barth village located between the border town of Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid town during the clashes between Egyptian Armed Forces and Islamist militants affiliated to ISIS. According to the Egyptian army spokesperson Tamer el-Rifa'i, the army besieged groups of terrorists and foiled attacks that targeted a number of other checkpoints in the Rafah area in North Sinai. Mahmoud Tawfik ( ar, محمود توفيق; born 1961) is an Egyptian politician and police officer. He serves as the Egyptian Minister of Interior.
